What Type of Offense Do We Have?

A quick question.

Someone asked me what type of offense the Cajuns are running.

Is it a pure option, spread option or what?

Hopefully, someone with better football knowledge can help me out.

We run what is called a zone read option. Texas and West Virginia both run examples of this type of offense. West Virginia's is probably the most similar to ours however. It is run out of spread formations.

Also we had elements of an Urban Meyer style spread option last year. If you remember bringing the WR's in motion into the backfield to assist in the running game. Urban Meyer loved using WR's in the running game while at Utah but he got away from it a lot at Florida last year because of the speed of the SEC defenses.

from what i can remember from what i saw last year id call it a triple option misdirection, since the ball can end up being run by either of the RBs or the QB depending on the read

Zone read option is right... zone blocking on the line and the QB reads where the hole will be...

Mitzcat, you are right about that style of offence, but Urban Meyer did continue to use it the whole year, which is what hurt his winning percentages in the SEC. And yes it is because of the speed in the SEC, your right about that too. With that style of offence, your have to have the right personal to run it, Florida did not have the qb to run that style of offence. If he uses it again, his winning percentages will stay the about the same. The speed, strenght and depth of the SEC contra indicates that style of offence, though on occasions , a play or two will be successful. Good insight on your part though...

When did Georgia leave the SEC? Because in the Sugar Bowl West Virginia ran all over the field against the Bulldogs. Florida will have better success using Urban Meyer's offense this 2nd year.

I agree that Urban will be much more successful because he was able to recruit players that fit hsi style but the most success will come in year 3 when Tim Tebow finally takes full reign on the offense. He is the perfect QB for that system because he is big enough to take a pounding and athletic enough to scare people in the open field.

Last year everyone underestimated how athletic and fast West Virginia was, they ran the zone read to perfection. They are one of the teams that I really enjoy watching.

Gators will do fine with Chris Leak. He is not a problem, but OL potentially is. Leak is one of the most prolific passers in Gator history. Meyer adjusted the system to fit Leak more during bye week before Georgia game last year and it worked. Gators are inexperienced in OL and secondary so probably will lose 2 or 3 again.

The SEC defense speed argument is overblown in my opinion. Spurrier did just fine with an offense that relied on speed and spreading the defense, leaving little protection for the qb. SEC offenses can be fast too. Gators have a very deep WR corps this year, including return of Caldwell (who was injured most of last year and which was the biggest problem for Meyer) and also two very talented true freshmen that may see significant time. Last year the WR corps were just not good enough for Gators once Caldwell went down. The OL was bad and the rbs were not consistent.

Tebowe is ready to play now and if Meyer thought Leak is not a fit for his system, then Tebowe would start because he already is ready to start at high level. But Leak is NFL ready and is one of the best qbs in the country.

I agree with you but Tebowe is what you think of when you think of a spread option offense. Leak is a great QB I will never doubt that but this offense was made for Tebowe.

I agree that Tebowe is definitely the better fit for the future. I think the problems Gators had last year were not Leak though, but were OL, WR, RB. Most of all, the Gators coaching staff, not only Meyer but all his assistants, is too young and inexperienced and it showed last year. Not allowing Spurrier to come back, due to egos of administration and most importantly the President being former head of Utah who hired Meyer, was a big mistake. But Meyer may get Gators back to national title competitor eventually. He is a young coach that has been very successful, but he is no Spurrier.
