Thread: Student Orientation and UL Athletics

  1. Default Student Orientation and UL Athletics

When you went through student orientation (whenever, wherever please post your experience) did your school give you a tour of the athletic facilities?

For instance did student orientation take you to Cajun Basin and take you down the tunnel into the Swamp? Or did you fin out much later that Cajun Field was more than just the upper deck.

I was wondering because UL's freshman orientation page does use the term "Ragin’ Cajun family" (an athletic term) but I can't find where athletic events or sports venues are mentioned as being a part of their soon to be University life experience. LINK

I found the Student Orientation Staff page and on the links page there is a link to ragincajuns.com and I saw a picture taken in front of one of the intramural fields, but again no mention of any fun exciting athletic events that no doubt add spice to the upcoming University lifestyle. SOS LINK

i had orientation at ULM, didnt have to at UL because i was a transfer, the monroe orientation involved a walking tour of the campus and they just pointed to the athletic facilities and said this is where x happens, i dont remember much else about it because it was a while back and my memory isnt that good, lots of beer between now and then, didnt need the tour of UL i was already familiar with the athletic facilities, my cousin played deep snapper for the cajuns, but i will say that the facilities at UL are much better than those at ULM imo as far as what the regular students have access to

From what I remember of my orientation there was not much talk at all about UL athletics which to me is a shame. The only thing I can remember doing was learning the fight song.

I have a Question Re: OK think back to your Student sports Orientation experience

I don't remember any push like I hear the public is supposedly getting. Nothing along the lines of students need to support Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns it's good for UL.

I had my orientation before the fall of 04. The only thing they did for athletics, was bring us to Cajun Field, and make us learn the fight song. They also had Coach Bustle and a few football players talk to us for a few minutes.

I was actually on SOS for two years in '03 and '04. We did make mention of sports throughout our sessions with the students. We would always push the fact that "Cajun Cards" were free tickets to every UL sporting event and that students should take advantage of that luxury. We'd pound home how fun the atmosphere of tailgaiting by cajun field was and things like that. Keep in mind, this was way before football began looking so bright.

In '04 we started bringing the freshman to Cajun Field and let them sit in the student section while learning the fight song w/ coach Bustle and a few players and cheerleaders. We attempted to do the same w/ the Cajundome, but it didn't pan out. There was always a concious effort on our part to push UL athletics to newcomers to UL such as Ragin' Roar, Homecoming, etc...

I transferred to UL in 98' and looking back on my first year, I can see how an orientation would have been beneficial. I would have liked to have known about the school's academic and athletic accomplishments. I was told nothing.

I cannot remember getting anything except academics, being told to look to my left and look to my right, and two of us would never graduate. Back then I don't think sports was a big thing for the incoming freshman. Fall 1966 hot chicks, and cold beer. How could a sporting event compete with that?

First post and trying to cool down. Not only was there no mention of sports for my orientation, there is no mention of sports while I was in school and there is no mention of sports for alumni. Oh yeah Ragin' Cajuns is everywhere but there is a disconnect from Ragin' Cajuns and sports. Nothing before, during or after UL, how do our teams succeed? Oh yeah alumni Ragin’ Cajun Clubs are used to recruit outstanding students not athletes. Alumni Ragin’ Cajun Clubs are to support the university financially. Alumni Ragin’ Cajun Clubs DO NOT support what gave them their name. There is not a single mention of sports on the Ragin' Cajun Clubs page. http://www.louisianaalumni.org/site24.php

I don' have perfect recollection of the old days... but it seems like they showed us where they kept the chariots, and we got to pet the lions. Oh, and they gave us the big styrofoam hand covers shaped in the "we are number one".

There was no student sports orientation that I can recall, back in 1980. I agree there should have been... but let's face it... that is nothing compared to the lack of sports facilitation in general.

It is past time for our top admin to over indulge in UL athletics. If you are an academian, and think that it will overshadow academics, then you need to stay in school for the rest of your life, and never ever join the free market economy. Oh, I forgot, that's what they are doing. They foster educating people to become capitalists and free thinkers, but they sit in a leather chair, making the same azz dent that they have for over 40 years, and miss the point, day in and day out.

I equate UL's lack of administrative commitment to sports to a business that refuses to use advertisement as a tool to increase business. It is not about Dr. A having an epiphany and all of the sudden tirelessly working toward creating a college sports powerhouse. It is about getting out of the way of those who will. Unleash the rage!
