Despite what some call a down economy, Lafayette Parks and Recreation saw one of its best years in 2011.
Everyday hundreds use Lafayette's parks and recreational facilities. In 2011, the department saw an overall revenue increase of three percent totaling nearly 700,000 dollars."Our programs continue to grow," said Gerald Boudreaux, Director of Lafayette Parks and Recreation.
Lafayette has 36 parks, 10 recreational and activity centers, and three golf courses. Last year more than 1000 volunteers kept the parks and activities running.
"Everybody is talking that the economy is a little sluggish, but I think in our community, parks and recreations has continued to provide some programming and opportunities," said Boudreaux.
While the numbers for parks and recreations made quite a splash in 2011, they are already exceeding their expectations for 2012.
"We still see an increase for programming and during the winter months there was more activities inside, so an increase there as well," said Boudreaux.
With the temperatures warming up activities are picking up again outdoors.
"I see the momentum has continued to swing in our favor and the results are very, very positive that we are going to have another successful year here at parks and recreations."
