Thread: Tuition fees for Academics

  1. Support Tuition fees for Academics

Louisiana’s full-time college students could be on the hook to pay an additional $300 or more per semester in new fees over the next three years, according to a plan State Commissioner of Higher Education Jim Purcell floated to a state Senate panel on Monday.

The proposed “stabilization” fee of up to $25 per credit hour is intended to partially offset more than $100 million in state funding cuts higher education has absorbed since the beginning of last year, Purcell said. The fees would be separate from tuition.

Yes but those fees would be general fund fees and would only marginally impact athletics. Regardless of whether or not the new tuition fees are imposed we also need student fees for athletics and we need them now. Because if we wait until after these fees are introduced we will have a very hard time selling students on additional fees for athletics.

What a joke? The big thing I read here is TOPS won't be part of the plan. Yep they refuse to balance the state budget in any of their pet projects, and refuse to spread the pain, so go ahead hit the poor. This will in effect throw lot of low income TOPS kids out of college, unless somehow they are exempted by means testing. This is not going to help your football team, this is the state, as I predicted weeks ago, not taking the heat for additional cuts to education.

I love the sunset clause. Bet we never see that sunset. Don't get me wrong, I am not totally against fees, or increases in tuition, but only after the entire state budget gets wacked.

    Almost impossible.

This seems like an end around to not allow athletic fees.

I thought I heard somewhere that the BOR was going to allow the universities to have more control over how much they charge for tuition? Ami I way off base here?

Should have happened in January when everyone was giddy with success? Thanks for the plan Doc.

At a minimum, it would at least provide alternative funding so Dr. S doesn't have to pull $1M from athletics. BTW, Tech has the same kind of shortfalls we do. How did they manage to get by without doing the same thing and come up with an extra $2M to joing CUSA? Big money boosters, I assume. Would UL have been able to do the same? Is that another reason Dr. S said we weren't ready yet?

Farmer said today that they are looking at student fees for athletics and Dr S could have something to bring to the UL board as soon as their next meeting.

That would have been known as good timing and striking while the iron is hot.

Again, I ask why didn't we do that at the same meeting that Tech asked for approval for its student fees? Now we have to wait for the next meeting of the Board. When will that be?

    Where did Farmer say that?
