Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - 2005 SEASON IN REVIEW: The UL Ragin' Cajuns' 2005 campaign was a memorable one as one of the programs best in recent memory, despite not making it to the postseason. Still, the Cajuns earned a share of the Sun Belt Conference title with Arkansas State and UL-Monroe at 5-2 and even posted the league's only winning overall mark at 6-5. The last time a UL club even reached five wins in a season was all the way back in 1996. If not for a 1-5 start to the season, the Cajuns could have easily been the Sun Belt representative in the New Orleans Bowl. Despite the slow start to the year, what really cost UL a postseason berth was a tough 39-36 loss to Arkansas State, which earned the tie-breaker with the win and a spot in the New Orleans Bowl. Still, the Cajuns finished the year with an impressive five game winning streak, marking the fifth longest current streak in the nation.
2006 ANALYSIS:
OFFENSE: The Cajuns possessed the top scoring offense in the Sun Belt in 2005, averaging 26.0 ppg on 386.6 total ypg. The team's option attack created all sorts of problems for opposing clubs, as ULayette averaged an impressive 254.3 ypg on the ground last season. With the return of quarterback Jerry Babb and running back Tyrell Fenroy, the Cajuns could be even harder to stop this time around. Babb, who missed several games with an injury in 2005, rushed for 400 yards and four scores, while also completing 62.2 percent of his passes for 859 yards and three scores. Michael Desormeaux will surely see some snaps under center considering his performance when Babb was injured last year. Desormeaux ended up starting four games last season and played in nine overall, finishing second on the club in rushing yards with 487. He trailed only freshman Tyrell Fenroy, who became just the second Cajun back ever to rush for 1,000 yards, ending with 1,053 and a team-high 12 touchdowns. With three starters returning on the offensive line, Fenroy should be able to run wild once again in 2006. As for the wide outs, they often got overlooked because of the Cajuns' powerful run game, but there is some talent returning. Corey Fredrick and Derrick Smith both return for ULayette after catching a combined 43 passes for 543 yards in 2005.
