Is there a rendering of the "finished" union?
Is there a rendering of the "finished" union?
Nevermind... They are on the Union website.
I'm okay with buildings that don't fit in but not on a college campus. But to each his own. And hey, at least you've still got Griffin Hall. And you're right, i don't think Dupre is MCM but I think it still followed that same MCM principal of standing apart from the buildings around it.
As far as the union is concerned, I hope you're right. I like the function of it. They moved it closer to the street, removed the parking lot, added more windows facing the swamp to sort of open the building up to the swamp. But I'm definitely confused about the form. To me it looks like the form borrows heavily from the old union. And of all the buildings on campus I don't know why they want to borrow ideas from that old, ugly, and uninspiring student union. I don't think we need to preserve that type of design in our future campus architecture. But once again, to each his own.
I might have an old yearbook that could have a photo of a single story Dupre Library.
I never knew that there used to be a baseball field where Fletcher Hall is located....
That was the baseball field before they moved to Clark Field for a few years and then they moved to Tigue Moore after it was built. The 'L" shaped object where the Student Union is now were tennis courts. There was a drive off of St. Mary that lead to the back of Burke Hall The drive crossed the side walk on St. Mary. You can still see remnants of that drive on the sidewalk (if you know where to look and know what to look for). A parking lot was located where Doucet Hall is. The photo also shows Voorhies Hall (now demolished) under construction as was the conference center
I have a bigger copy, but when it was loaded here in 2003 https://forumeus.com/...Campus-1965-66 we were limited by server and bandwidth constraints so we limited the pixels to 500 wide. Will look for larger version.
