You know Mel when I was a student at UL I was asked to model in a fashion show---just thinking if you have one that maybe.... ah never mind---Do all of you know what the furniture disease is???? It is when your chest drops in your drawers!!! Damn gravity!!!
Concerning the Lourdes property....
I was in a meeting a few months ago where Joey Durel was discussing Lafayette properties. Being I live in the Saint Street area, I asked what is going on with the old Lourdes hospital and it's associated properties since many people in our neighborhood are worried about it being vacant and the problems such a large vacated building brings to our neighborhood. Mayor Durel stated that UL is currently in a "land-locked" situation around campus and expansion is difficult. When city of Lafayette bought the Horse Farm from UL, the city government proposed that UL use proceeds from the sale to acquire the Lourdes property on St Mary/St Landry. The acquisition of the property would give UL room to expand around campus, which I feel is a great direction for the University.
The good news is that the old Lourdes hospital building is useless and needs to be demolished. That means UL would only have to buy the property it sits on and not the property + buildings on it. I would really like to see this take place.
I had a contractor in our office a couple of months ago who was in the process of submitting bids to demolish the old Lourdes. It should occur shortly.
BTW, UL has $10 million set aside for the purchase of additional property. That was included in the rather large pdf that was in the last UL board meeting giving approval for the work at the athletic complex as well as the parking garage.
I thought for sure that the buildings (excluding the parking garages) were being demolished---I have heard that the problem is the long term lease that the Lourdes people have with the diocese---The hospital although moving to a new location still is obliged to make the negotiated payments--Have no idea what will happen but UL needs this!!!
Beau you are correct--not many know this but Bishop Jarrell and I were on the same coaching staff----He was a real motivator and before the Kinder game he told us what it was spelled backwards---REDNIK---I almost wizzed on myself!!! What a great guy!!!
I thought that the Horse Farm money was being set aside specifically for the Lourdes purchase---really don't know---anybody have the scoop?? Beau would that be part of the $10 mill???
