7:00 A.M Sunday morning alarm clock.



They break the concrete with the demolition hammer to knock it away from the reinforcing steel. You can see the chunks of concrete between the rebar.



They keep a constant spray of water on the debris to keep the dust down.



They then use a back hoe with a debris thumb to peal out the steel.



They will have plenty of rebar on this job. When they hit the structure with the bucket it was like hitting a trampoline. The foreman said they can pay for labor and fuel with the recycled metals. There wasn't enough glass to worry about recycling on this job. It basically gets ground to sand during the demolition process. The concrete and brick will go to Recycled Rock in Scott. A guy by the name of John Fell owns the place. His place is on the north west side of the I-10 exit at Scott. Usually a big pile of material there.

Helmut, I have a stupid question: do you know if this will this be the same process they use, once they start on the second and third stories? What kind of equipment will they use to reach this heights? Thx again

I thinking they may bring in a larger machine for the three story building. Problem is they need more room to maneuver a larger piece of equipment. They won't have that until the first two buildings are gone.

Thanks for the pics Helmut. My wife & I were on campus last month (we actually found our bricks from '99!) and she commented on how poorly those building looked next to so many updated/new buildings. Glad to see them go and excited to hear that the area will be opened up for the swamp to 'breath".

David, thanks for the updates and posting all the photos!! Your photo of the corner of the old bowling alley over Cyprus Lake brought back many memories--one of my FAVORITE spots on campus outside of the bandroom!

Would love to see them. BTW: I was just re-looking at your pic above that has a good view of the underside of the overlook...you can really see how it truly is a bulkhead, and the real trouble/expense they would have to tear it down, and then have to replace it.

I took bowling as a PE class in Gullory hall. I made a 7-10 split spare on lane 2 one day. It came that close to being a gutter ball.

Worked at the alley while in school, and really enjoyed bowling. My wife and I participated in a league at night for a while there. I'm pretty sure we had a pretty good university team at that time as well.
