Thread: Student Union Construction.

  1. Default Construction Phase

In the coming months, an updated and larger version of the University of Louisiana's Student Union will emerge from behind the familiar, white columns that have framed the building for decades.

Most of the existing building was demolished to make way for the upgrades and an additional 30,000 square feet of space. Parts of the former 128,000-square-foot building that will remain for renovations include the bookstore area, ballroom and the Bayou Bijou Theatre.

What is the area from the apart/dorms to the Union going to be??? I was under the impression that it would be a village street walk area with restaurants and shops!!!!

I'm sure they are somewhere else in the thread, but here are a couple of links.
    From a real estate company

    On the recycling aspect

And a nice Vermilion article from last year on the project.

"More than 77 percent of the material torn down during expansion and renovation work on the Student Union has been recycled. The recycled debris included over 440 tons of metal and 11,504 tons of concrete. Recycling will help the university earn LEED certification, a voluntary, internationally recognized green building program."

I hope they are using the concrete to crest artificial reefs near the ever receding wetlanfs

The concrete was hauled to Recycled Rock north of the I-10 Scott exit. They crush it and use it for road base. Its' sieve analysis is almost like No 57 limestone although it has a little bit more fines. It's pretty good material and has cost advantages over limestone. When the crush it they can remove the rebar ans any other metal that may be in the concrete.

I did not realize the new Student Union would be LEED certified, this is impressive and I am glad I am not involved in the construction management. LEED for homes was a pain enough I can't imagine doing it commercially. I wonder what the additional cost vs benefit is for this project, that would be interesting to see.

That's impressive, No 57 is a great open aggregate that can be used in a number of applications (used it on a permeable driveway). Do you know if this is the rock that is used under turf fields such as Cajun Field and the Tigue? Thanks for all your insight as always
