Thread: Kellman New Dean of UL College of Liberal Arts

  1. Default Kellman New Dean of UL College of Liberal Arts

Dr. Jordan Kellman will become dean of the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Louisiana July 1. The UL System Board of Supervisors approved the appointment Tuesday morning.

He replaces Dr. David Barry, who retired earlier this year.

“Dr. Kellman is eminently qualified to lead the college,” said Dr. Carolyn Bruder, interim provost and vice president for Academic Affairs. “Ultimately, I believe his broad experience and deep understanding of our university’s culture and aspirations will be a tremendous asset to the college.”

Kellman is an associate professor of history and has served as interim director of Academic Planning and Faculty Development since 2010.

He earned his Ph.D. at Princeton University in the History of Science and French History. He holds master’s degrees from Princeton and UC-Berkeley and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois.

His research focuses on the circulation of knowledge and commodities in colonial Atlantic, and has been supported by the National Science Foundation and the Mellon Foundation.

Kellman said he hopes to develop the international focus of the college by promoting study abroad programs and coordinating the international components of its curricula.

“I also want to develop and promote the college’s role as a bearer of Louisiana history, heritage and culture,” he said.

Other priorities include developing a broader culture of sharing best practices in teaching and student retention and encouraging and promoting the college’s faculty research.

The College of Liberal Arts includes 10 departments: Communication, Communicative Disorders, Criminal Justice, English, History and Geography, Modern Languages, Moving Image Arts, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology and Anthropology.
