  1. Research 1.3 million helps create 13 new UL professorships

UL received more than a half-million dollars in state money to pair with private donations to create 13 professorships, officials told those gathered at the Alumni Center on Thursday.

The $520,000 from the Board of Regents Support Fund will help establish the new higher-paid positions, bringing the university's total professorships to 238. UL also has 22 department chair positions.

These positions offer an opportunity for the university to attract top faculty who bring expertise to the classroom, said Ray Authement, UL president.

The money will complete 13 endowed professorships at UL. The endowments for the 13 professorships are part of the Regents' Endowed Chair and Eminent Scholars and Endowed Professorships program.

To create endowed professorships and chairs, universities must raise 60 percent of the cost from private donations.

  2. ooh LA La. Board of Regents boosts ULL endowments

LAFAYETTE — The state Board of Regents on Thursday handed over a $520,000 check to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette — the state’s match to $780,000 given by ULL donors to support 13 new endowed professorships at the school.

“As time goes on, we will have the resources to attract top faculty to this university,” ULL President Ray Authement said at a ceremony to mark the creation of the professorships.

The money will be placed into an account, with the interest payments used to boost faculty salaries.

The 13 new $100,000 professorships created Thursday bring the total number at the university to 238.

ULL also has 22 endowed $1 million chairs.

“It has allowed us to recruit faculty that the Stanfords and MITs would love to have,” said Dean of the College of Engineering Mark Zappi, whose college received two additional professorships this year.

Thursday also marked the creation of the seventh Dr. Tommy Comeaux Memorial Endowed Professorship in Traditional Music.

Comeaux, a well-known Lafayette physician and musician, died in 1997.

A committee has been working since his death to create an endowed $1 million chair in his honor to support faculty in a traditional music program.

A chair requires 10 professorships, so three more are needed, each gained by $60,000 in donations and a $40,000 state match.

  3. Research UL ponders diversity effort

Over the next few months, UL will try to pin down what it can do to attract a more diverse student body.

The effort is in the "investigative" stages, said Joe Dennis, a local community activist who is co-chairman of the university's diversity advisory committee.

"We're trying to find out why local students go to UL or don't go to UL," Dennis said. "What we're doing is looking at what it is that the university can do to improve the situation."

This semester, 19 percent of UL's freshmen class is black, and black students make up 18 percent of the total enrollment, said Dan Rosenfield, UL's dean of enrollment management.

Default Re: UL ponders diversity effort

Its as simple as this... Everytime the entry standards go up, the number of black students goes down... I see it teaching in high school... the kids at inner city schools (black, white, and hispanic (I have alot of them)) are just waaaaaaay behind the kids from the suburbs. So its not a race thing (since my white kids are, for the most part, no better than the black and hispanic kids), its a "place" thing, it just so happens that the place with higher percentage of black kids is the place that is producing the poor students.

  5. Research Princeton Review includes UL business college in list of top 282 schools

The University of Louisiana’s B.I. Moody III College of Business Administration made the Princeton Review’s Best 282 Business Schools, 2007 edition.

The book will be released on Tuesday.

The rankings lists are based on surveys of students from the 2003, 2004 and 2005 academic years. Rankings include categories like “Best Academic Experience,” Best Career Prospects” and even “Greatest Opportunity for Women.”

While UL is profiled in the book as one of 282 included in the edition, it is not ranked on any of the book’s lists.

  6. Research Academic requirements paying off for ULathletes

At least six hours a week Ashley Ragan spends time in study hall.

While she studies more hours than that in a week, the six hours she puts in are part of her requirements of being the mid-infielder on UL's softball team. Like other athletes, Ragan manages her time around her classes and her sport. In the offseason, she said she's in practice about two and a half hours a day.

"It's tough, but if you put your mind to it, you can do it," Ragan said. "I love it. I don't know what I'd do if I didn't have sports."

Mandatory study hall and other academic requirements for UL's athletes are put in place not only to keep them eligible to play, but eligible for their degree, said Danny Cottonham, director of UL's student athlete academic center.

Last week, the NCAA released its most recent team-by-team graduation success rates for student-athletes who began classes between 1996 and 1999.

According to the data, UL's men's golf team and women's tennis team had the highest graduation success rates of other teams on campus. The golf team's graduation rate was 89 percent, while the rate for the women's tennis team was 78 percent.
