Suspect In Death Of Crowley Child Has Criminal History Involving Children

A Crowley woman, facing a first-degree murder charge in the death of a one year old girl this weekend has a criminal history involving children, and there's been a warrant out for her arrest since 2009.

Court records show LaTonya Ismail was arrested in 2008 on a cruelty to a juvenile charge. According to previous reports filed by KATC, it was in June of 2008 when police were called to a Lafayette hospital for reports of a one year old boy with suspicious burns to his feet and bottom. The boy was treated and released from the hospital, but the boy's mother told investigators she noticed the burns after picking him up from his babysitter, LaTonya Ismail.

Ismail was due in court on the charges in December of 2009, but when she did not show up, a warrant was issued for her arrest. The Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Department reports that in March of 2010, they received a tip that Ismail was living and working in the Crowley-area. Deputies say they advised the Crowley City Marshal of her whereabouts, but it's unclear why Ismail was never arrested.

Ismail is currently being held at the Acadia Parish jail without bond. The baby who died in Crowley has not yet been identified. According to Crowley police, the girl showed signs of physical abuse, but autopsy results are still pending.
