Do you agree with Babb?

In an article today by Dan McDonald, Jerry Babb is quoted as saying that wins over aTm and aLm would be fun, and great for the program but not as big as winning the conference and the NO Bowl. Agree or disagree?

On one hand I'm inclined to disagree, because for one thing there's nothing I'd love better than to beat the Tigers at what they do best, football. aTm is not too shabby either. Beating both of these teams would mean alot for this program.

However, beating these two teams would only prove big in the short term. Long term and down the road, I think we'll get more respect, better recruits, etc if we win the conference and the NO bowl.

If I had the following choice:

a) 10-2 season with wins over LSU and Texas A&M, but a loss to Houston and to Troy and losing out to Troy in tie breaker for New Orleans Bowl; or

b) a 10-2 season with only losses to LSU and Texas A&M,

I would choose A. It seems illogical that the Cajuns could win the first two games and continue to play at a high level, but not get an at large bowl berth if no New Orleans bowl automatic bid. Of course, it is a bit illogical that the Cajuns could win the first two games to begin with. But wins over those programs would put the Cajuns in the top 25 most likely and Cajuns program would rise to level of a Fresno State almost overnight. Two blow out losses to Tigers and Aggies and then winning the rest of the games would be a very very good season and one that all Cajuns fans should be very proud of, but in such a scenario, Cajuns football program would be perceived sort of like North Texas from previous few years - a mediocre team that rolls through sunbelt by default, due to the weak conference, and a team that can every now and then perhaps compete with the better than average in the Conference USA come New Orleans bowl time.

Wins over LSU and Texas A&M would put Cajuns in spot light and would be one of the biggest sports stories of the year in general, not only one of the biggest college football stories of the year.

I agree with him because if we win one of thoughs games and lose 6 games and not make it to the bowl game, people will quickly forget that you won any big game. Also for the future of the program a conference championship means a lot more than beating either one of thoughs schools because we will never be compared to LSU, we need to strive to be recognized as a top mid major and to do that we have to win the games on our level (like Houston, Eastern Michigan, and all the sunbelt schools)

North Texas though never had good quality wins over ooc teams. They beat I believe Memphis in the New Orleans bowl but no one else that really matters. 10-2 is a record that no one in the sunbelt conference has ever had. The last few conference champs all had 7-4 or 6-5 teams. The first year of the Sunbelt conference North Texas got into the New Orleans bowl with a 5-6 record. So I believe when you beat the other teams on your level like the Houstons and Eastern Michigans it looks better than beating an LSU and turning around and losing to Eastern Michigan because then it is looked at as just a fluke.

Beating an LSU team that is considered a national title contender is probably nearly impossible this year, but if everything fell into place and it happened, and LSU bounced back to remain a top 10 team, then it would be quite a step above the Texas A&M win. Personally, I think it is highly unlikely that cajuns could lose to Eastern Michigan if they beat LSU and A&M. A&M alone maybe, as they are not necessarily a great team this year and have many question marks, but not both.

If Cajuns did the near impossible and beat LSU and A&M, it is highly improbable that they would have more than two losses the rest of the way and would more than likely have one or zero.

Unfortunately, Cajuns will probably lose be 21+ to LSU and lose by a couple of touchdowns to A&M. Fortunately, Cajuns will likely win the sunbelt and beat EMU and McNeese if they stay focused. The mystery game is Houston. That would be a realistic step forward for a Sunbelt team to beat a better than average conference USA team.

North Texas rolled over the sunbelt three straight years but could not compete very well at all against major programs. That is why North Texas eventually faded away and teams like Fresno and Boise stay in the spotlight. If Cajuns dominate sunbelt the next few years (that would be amazing), well I think we would need at least one quality BCS or Conference USA top 3 teams win a year to be more than just the winner of sunbelt by default. Fresno State did it, so why can't the Cajuns become a giant killer over the next few years?

Beating either of those first two teams will get you noticed in the national media; but consistently winning conference games (and championships) will IMO have a more lasting affect. I'm sure everyone here (real Cajun fans that is) would love to see us upset LSU; but its just not likely; whereas winning the conference and even a bowl game is.

I contend aTm ignored the turnover equation, "freaked out" and unnecessarily tried to revamp some things during the season and never jelled.

By contrast UL did the opposite and basked in the glow a bi to long and failed to work on real needs.

In hindsight a different result might have helped both schools that very year and down the road.

I revise my answer after reading y'alls answers. This season, I think it'd be best case and most realistic to win all our other games. Long term, I agree with those who say we should have a Fresno State strategy of winning conf. consistently, beating top mid major teams consistenly, and every so often bein a giant killer.

I believe playing LSU and Texas A&M close and having an opportunity to pull out a win would be great. However, winning the rest of our non-conference games and winning the conference outright and heading to the N.O. Bowl will show we are heading in the right direction.

I'd rather win the Sun Belt and see the Cajuns play in the New Orleans Bowl than beating either LSU or A&M. Winning the conference title does more for our program than just a one time victory over LSU or A&M.
