What appears to be a lopsided intrastate battle will ensue in Baton Rouge on Saturday as the eighth-ranked LSU Tigers host the UL- Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns. The Cajuns earned a share of the Sun Belt Conference title last season with a 5-2 record despite finishing just 6-5 overall. If not for a 1-5 start to the campaign, UL-Lafayette could have been the conference's representative in the New Orleans Bowl. The last time the program even reached five wins in a season was way back in 1996, so players, fans and coaches are all excited about the direction the team is going. With 13 starters back in place on offense and defense, the winning attitude figures to remain. As for LSU, it proved to be one of the most exciting teams in the nation last season, playing three memorable overtime contests in addition to several other close games. The Tigers reached the SEC Championship Game, and despite a loss to Georgia, the program is firmly entrenched as one of the best in all the SEC. There are a decent number of key contributors, including 14 starters, back from the 2005 team, the same squad that smoked Miami by a 40-3 final in the Peach Bowl. LSU has won three straight season openers and nine of its last 10 dating back to 1996. Considering that the Tigers have won all 20 previous meetings with the Cajuns, a victory by UL-Lafayette on Saturday would be shocking to say the least.
UL-Lafayette owned the top scoring offense in the Sun Belt in 2005, averaging 26.0 ppg on 386.6 total ypg. The team's option attack created all sorts of problems for opposing clubs, as UL-Lafayette averaged an impressive 254.3 ypg on the ground last season. With the return of quarterback Jerry Babb and running back Tyrell Fenroy, the Cajuns expect those numbers to hold strong. Babb rushed for 400 yards and four scores last season while also completing 62.2 percent of his passes for 859 yards and three scores. Injuries held Babb down a bit, but he is healthy entering this season. So, too, is Michael Desormeaux, who started four games last season and played in nine overall. Expect both signal callers to see some time under center against LSU. Fenroy became just the second Cajun back ever to rush for 1,000 yards, ending with 1,053 and a team-high 12 touchdowns. With three starters returning on the offensive line, Fenroy and both quarterbacks should be able to run wild once again in 2006. Keep in mind however, that the LSU defense is much stiffer than those the Cajuns will face in Sun Belt Conference play.
Everyone's seeing "red" today at UL Lafayette. They're supporting the Ragin Cajuns as they prepare to go to tiger stadium to take on LSU in the first football game of the season.
Students we talked with say they're hoping the Cajuns win. Everyone's excited about supporting the Cajuns. Win or lose students tell us they'll have a good time.
"We'll be wearing red tomorrow and we'll be having a tailgating party before the game at the governor's mansion to get ready to go out and play the tigers."
Juno Guedry ordered a hamburger Cajun style for his Friday lunch.
"I told the girl I wanted the yellow cheese on the bottom, with a big Cajun burger on the top," Guedry said.
Joe Hunter, a proud LSU supporter from Lafayette, wasn't going to let that go unchallenged.
"I told him that too much of that yellow cheese will kill you," Hunter said. "He needed to back off of it some."
And so it went, back and forth, at Pete's Family Sports Restaurant on Johnston Street. A seven-man crew from Bernhard Mechanical Contractors Inc. had one of Pete's prized center tables for lunch, and the only topic of conversation was tinted in purple, gold and red.
Bernhard Mechanical was a business divided with this weekend's UL-LSU football game - divided in fun, nothing ugly, but divided nonetheless.
"It's a good, friendly rivalry in our office," said company President Kenny Bernhard. "It's fun. Too many people take it a little too seriously, but to me it's good for the community."

Preserve and frame every newspaper clipping showing the embarassment. I live in San Diego, so no one cares as much out here.
