Thread: Rickey Hardy's idea for Kim Perrot drawing praise in area.

  1. UL Basketball Rickey Hardy's idea for Kim Perrot drawing praise in area.

Over the duration of her basketball career, Kim Perrot received many accolades and honors including being considered an ambassador for the game.

If Lafayette Parish School Board member Rickey Hardy has his way, Perrot will receive another prestigious honor, in the form of naming the basketball gym at Acadiana High School in her memory.

"You have to recognize the contributions Kim made to the parish," said Hardy, who will state his case on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.. "If you can't recognize our athletes when they do extremely well, when will you recognize them."

Perrot, who starred for the Lady Rams before continuing her success with UL, a European professional league and the WNBA's Houston Comets, died at the age of 32 after losing her battle against lung and brain cancer in 1999.

"I think my daughter has accomplished a lot," Perrot's mother Consuela said, "not just in basketball, but in life as well. We're talking about an underprivileged kid who made it."

The 5-5 Perrot, who won two WNBA championships as a member of the Comets, is still the Cajuns' all-time leader in scoring (2,157), assists (654) and steals (421).

  2. UL Basketball Hardy: Name gym for Perrot

Lafayette Parish School Board member Rickey Hardy is not afraid of change.

His latest demonstration will come at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday when he asks the Lafayette Parish School Board to name the Acadiana High School gymnasium in memory of former women's basketball star Kim Perrot.

Perrot, a former standout guard at Acadiana High, UL and the WNBA's Houston Comets, died in 1999 at the age of 32 after losing her battle against lung and brain cancer.

Perrot, who won two WNBA Championships as a member of the Houston Comets, still is the Cajuns' all-time leader in scoring (2,157), assists (654) and steals (421). Her 58-point performance against Southeastern Louisiana on Feb. 5, 1990, remains the second-highest single-game performance in the NCAA's women's basketball history.

"Why shouldn't we recognize Kim by naming the gym in her honor?" Hardy said. "I don't see any reason as to why we shouldn't do this. We've named the football stadium at Acadiana High in Bill Dotson's honor and we've named the baseball field at Northside in Chester Broussard's honor."

I support it. Everything I know about Kim suggests to me that it is a richly deserved honor.

  5. UL Basketball Residents: Name gym for Perrot

Residents came out to speak and remember basketball star Kim Perrot on Wednesday, as a debate began about how to honor the former Acadiana High School, UL and WNBA basketball star of Lafayette.

Members of the Lafayette Parish School Board saw tears and heard pleas from the public to name Acadiana High's girls gymnasium in honor of Perrot, who died at 32 from lung and brain cancer in 1999.

Although nothing was decided officially at the School Board meeting, Superintendent James Easton requested a committee be formed to determine the best possible ways to honor Perrot.

"My interpretation of all of this is that we should put together a committee so that we can find the most fitting and appropriate way to honor Kim," Easton said, "and I think we will do that."

It wasn't determined whether or not an official vote would take place at the next board meeting, which is scheduled for Aug. 2.

But you know it will if Williams and Benjamin have anything to say about it.

Thankfully, Acadiana High is in neither of their districts.
