The phone call to the Fitzgerald home reached Trae shortly after he returned from playing five games of softball on Saturday at Carencro's Pelican Park.
He was unwinding from his team's third-place finish in tournament play, a spot that earned a berth in upcoming state tournament action in Thibodaux.
"We got third in the tournament, but it was hot," Fitzgerald admitted.
A few months ago, the Comeaux High graduate wasn't able to enjoy softball. Banged up at the end of his senior football season, the linebacker needed to have work done.
"Right after the season ended, I had reconstructive surgery on my shoulder," Fitzgerald said. "I've been rehabbing it since March. Since then, it's been five days a week. I took a week off for vacation, but otherwise I've been at it since then."
Fitzgerald was a big part of a special season for the Spartans in 2005, and he's hoping to join the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns as a walk-on this season. The thought of surgery would be vexing for some in similar circumstances, but not Fitzgerald.
