UL assistant football coach Brian Jenkins has said for years he wanted to do something to give back to his Fort Lauderdale, Fla., hometown.
This weekend, hešs doing it, and he's enlisted the help of the entire Cajun football staff. Jenkins and a couple of athletically involved friends in the Fort Lauderdale area are staging a free camp for all youths in the area, but primarily for disadvantaged and underprivileged children.
"There are a lot of kids who donšt have the finances to attend some of the big-time football camps," Jenkins said. "This gives them a chance to see what theyšre like, and to get some experience and coaching from college coaches."
The camp runs all day Saturday at the Oakland Park Sports Complex. The younger kids will take part in the morning and the high-school age in the afternoon. In addition to on-field football, Jenkins said that break-out sessions will involve doctors and other individuals to talk on health issues, academics and life skills.
Parents are also free to take part. Some of the football names Jenkins has involved include wide receiver Isaac Bruce of the St. Louis Rams and former NFL players Michael Timpson, James Bostick and Otis Mounds.
