Just as UL¹s football team did during the 2005 season, the Ragin¹ Cajuns are rallying from behind with a strong second-half push. The Cajun football team won its final five games last year after a 1-5 start, finishing with a winning record and a share of the Sun Belt Conference title. Now, the nickname is following suit. The ESPN.com Web site has a poll in its college football section to determine the "best things in college sports" as part of its Sports Nation program. One of the nine poll questions is "Which school has the best nickname?" "Ragin' Cajuns" is one of the 10 options. As of Thursday noon, the Cajuns were second with 17.6 percent of the vote, trailing the Cal-Santa Cruz Banana Slugs with 20.6 percent of just over 90,000 votes. Alabama's Crimson Tide was washed away, a distant third at 12.9 percent. Obviously, UL supporters and other fans realized that all things Cajun are better than slimy slugs, and have turned around the voting. . . . . . The rest of the story

For what it's worth, here are my other votes:

Fight song: Notre Dame Victory March. Period.

Tradition: Texas A&M 12th Man. Real history there, not just some silly slogan.

Logo: Notre Dame. I'm biased, but you gotta' admit, it either causes people to smile or foam at the mouth. Instantly recognizable.

Best Fans: Texas A&M. Just from personal experience, I've never been treated any better as a visiting fan than I have in Aggieland.

Live Mascot: LSU. Like someone else said, lots of folks have bulldogs, cows and horses. I don't think anyone else brings a Tiger out there. Besides, you gotta' be a brave SOB to handle one of those suckers.

Constumed Mascot: Miami. Great combination of goofiness and irrelevance to the nickname.

College Town: College Station, Texas. What the h e l l can I say? I LIVE HERE!!

Rivalry: UT/TAMU. This is what I grew up with. If you're from Texas, you're more likely to get something productive done on Thanksgiving itself rather than the following day.

HUNTINGTON -- What do the Thundering Herd and Banana Slugs have in common? They are two of the 13 nicknames in an ESPN.com poll of the best nicknames in college sports. As of Friday afternoon, the Louisiana Lafayette Ragin Cajuns were leading the poll with 21.6 percent of the vote. The University of California-Santa Cruz Banana Slugs were second with 19.5 percent.
