For those of you into computer sports gaming, EA Sports’ “NCAA Football ‘07” is hitting the game racks in late July, with the Ragin’ Cajuns in the lineup of teams available to game players. I’m not a computer gamer, but friends who are tell me there’s a suttle reference in the game that will make a lot of Cajun fans happy when they select their favorite team for play. Several places in the game, when the Cajuns are referenced, the initials “UL” are used as an abbreviation for the University of Louisiana. Apparently, previous year’s versions of the game referred to the school as “ULL.” The game itself has several new features for this year, including modes for changing momentum in a game, a “Campus Legend” mode which follows a player throughout a typical day including class attendance and other parts of college life, “Smart Fans” in the stadium, a “Dynasty Mode” that allows players to build a team over a full decade of seasons, and team-specific playbooks. Colleges profit from video game's success For years, some colleges and universities have made millions of dollars off the on-field performances of their high-profile football teams. These days, those same schools are finding the virtual versions of their powerhouse programs profitable, too. NCAA Football '07, the latest installment of Electronic Arts Sports' popular NCAA Football video game franchise, has been on sale since July 18, retailing from $39.99 to $59.99, depending on the console. The game is expected to produce millions for EA Sports and six-figure paydays for some institutions whose football teams are traditionally strong. Last year, NCAA Football '06 generated more than $79 million in revenues, a franchise record. That's up almost $65 million from the revenues produced by the 2001 version of the game, which was released in 2000. The NCAA Football franchise began in 1993 under a different name, Bill Walsh College Football. That first game included 24 schools and wasn't licensed -- meaning that school logos, mascots and stadiums weren't part of the game. "Bill Walsh" became licensed the next year, in 1994, and the franchise's popularity has seemed to increase with each release. "[The game] has grown dramatically over 10 years," said Derek Eiler, the chief operating officer of the Collegiate Licensing Company, which represents the NCAA, the Heisman Trophy, several bowl games, conferences and more than 200 colleges and universities. The '06 game made more than enough for EA to spread royalties among every school represented in the game. There are several tiers that determine the amount of money a school receives. The six-year contract between EA and the CLC, which began last year and gives EA Sports exclusive rights to make an NCAA football game, prohibits either side from publicly discussing royalties. Football reigns supreme I have tried my hand at baseball, basketball, golf and even hockey, but my best sport is football. At 5-10, 175, I finally am the right size to play running back for a college team, but I am well past my prime. I can only play through the controls of the video game, so now I am legend in my own mind. While I like to watch NFL football, my favorite is college football. The same is true in my selection of video games. I do have John Madden's NFL game. but for past several years I have become addicted to the NCAA version. Every year I have to get used to something new the techies added or changed. This year, it has been trying to kick field goals. I used to could make up to 55-yarders (in real life, my longest in high school was 35 yards). After being the first in line to purchase the new game (the checkout clerk recognized me as the DW sports editor) it took several nights of practice after work before I could make anything longer than an extra point. After about three weeks now, I can make a 40-yard occasionally - but not real often. My prayer is the championship game doesn't come down to a field goal. (Remember the goal post game last year between LSU and Auburn?) There are several new interesting items in this year's version.
