Moss arrived in prep school as a quality shooter but needed to improve his rebounding, conditioning, footspeed and athleticism after playing at a lower level of competition in Louisiana. His prep coach said he's improved in all areas but can still get better.
Based on what I've been told, he is a classic tweener at the high-major level. Can shoot the ball from the outside, but at 6-9/6-10 isn't quite strong enough right now to match up inside with other bigs his size or larger and not quite quick enough to defend on the perimeter against other 3s.
But in the Sun Belt, the Cajuns can play him at the 4 or 5 without him being challenged as much defensively as if he played for a high-major program. He can create mismatches at the 4 or 5 that Marlin wants in his system, similar to what Darshawn McClellan did this season.
If he can shoot 60% from three point range, that's twice what anyone shot this year.

Ok Mr. Expert. Did you see the UL BB team at all this past season? It sounds as if this young man is exactly what this team needs right now. Not a year from now, but today. Don't know about you, but 60+% from 3 point range, 80% FTs, & 10 rebounds a game is exactly what this team needs if it' s ever gonna compete for a conference title & go back to the NCAAs. Why is it that every time UL lands a good prospect certain fans think that by letting them roost on the bench for a year, they'll only get better. A player gets better by competing. The coaches at Duquene obviously realized this & that's why they advised the young man to go to this academy.
He should be ready to take on a major contributing role right away. If not, then there is an issue. If you see a problem with this post, then you are the perfect example of the riff raff to which I refer. I actually came on here because I read an article which got me excited about supporting the basketball team more & guys like yourself still can find a problem with that? I guess some folks just want an empty arena so they feel like they're bigger fish. I thought the object was to get more people worked up so the program could regain some of its previous prestige.
I have season tickets, so yes I actually saw them play.
I've also seen this kid play in High School. He is a nice signing for the Cajuns.
But .... I don't think he'll shoot or rebound at that rate, even in the Sun Belt. But I think he could provide some matchup problems and draw the bigger defenders to the perimeter, much like Chris Cameron did for us a few years ago.
We need guards that can shoot, I'll agree with you on that point. Pretty obvious to anyone who saw the Cajuns play.
All kidding aside - just like to give you a hard time. Any time someone is excited for the Cajuns, that is a good thing. I hope you buy season tickets. Hell ... I'd even buy you a few beers there if you did.
At this point they need anyone who can shoot any kind of jumper & free throws consistently. Another observance with the disclaimer that I am NO SELF PROFFESSED BASKETBALL EXPERT!!!! It seems as though a lot of college teams are starting to give up too much shooting, fundamentals, & offense for athleticism & defense. From what I got to see this year, it seems as though that is the popular trend in college basketball.
I wrote some of the skills that he could improve in prep school but never wrote that those were the reasons for going there.
The young man told me Duquesne recommended he attend prep school to raise an English test score but made no mention of being a non-qualifier. It was to get admitted to that particular school. You can be a qualifier but still not be admitted to a school. Happens a lot at schools in the Ivy League, Rice, Stanford, etc.
His prep coach said he went to prep school because Duquesne ran out of scholarships and that he was a qualifier. Exactly what the reason was really doesn't matter as he will be eligible next season.
I think you're exactly right.
And this is the reason we went to Denver and North Dakota State and lost both by 20 plus. Both of those teams are fundamentally sound and can shoot the basketball. In both games we obviously had the more athletic team.
Just goes to prove your point we justneed a couple of shooters to become a very, very good team.
I saw Matt Moss play before. Like someone mention before me, Moss is in the same clone as Chris Cameron. He has a beautiful shot and when he is hot can be deadly from the outside, kind of like Chris Cameron was in a couple of games during the 2004-2005 season. His defense reminds me of Cameron also. He lacks the speed to guard on the perimeter and isn't strong enough to guard a big time post player. Hopefully Moss can come in right away and provide us with some 3 point shooting and a consistent free throw shooter.
I have talked to another guy who say Moss play in HS and was not impressed. I presume that was in the Top 28. Basketball wise, that is a long time ago since it was his sophomore year in HS. Since that time, he has played a junior and senior in 2A ball and a year in Prep School. One thing that impressed me was his team won the Prep School national title. God, they were 31 and 3 going against JUCO schools and JV's of major programs. At a program that accomplished something very significant, he averaged 16 pts. and 9 rbg. Obviously, he has improved greatly since he was a sophomore in HS. Recruiting at the mid-major level is not always about beating out schools from the Big 6 conferences to land a signee, it is about filling a need. It is obvious to all that perimeter shooting is a need for the Cajuns and this kid may help fill that role.
