Tulane back to the SEC????
Tulane back to the SEC????
They used to be in the Southeastern Conference many years ago. Also read somewhere that Tulane was once the University of Louisiana
Located in New Orleans, Tulane traces its origins to the Medical College of Louisiana, the Deep South’s second-oldest medical school, which was founded in 1834. By 1847, the Medical College was part of the newly established public institution, the University of Louisiana.
Tulane emerged as a private university in 1884 when the public University of Louisiana was reorganized and named in honor of benefactor Paul Tulane, a wealthy merchant who donated more than $1 million in land, cash and securities “for the promotion and encouragement of intellectual, moral and industrial education.” A native of Princeton, N.J., Paul Tulane had made his fortune in New Orleans and his gift expressed his appreciation to this Southern city on the Mississippi River. In 1886, the H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College was established for women as part of the university. Newcomb-Tulane College today enrolls all undergraduates at the university.
Though sometime faulty, my memory is that their administration decided as an academic institution sports was becoming too important, and de-emphasized all sports. I think they actually were fairly competitive nationally, but as part of the administration choice included dropping out of the SEC. Imagine, they could have been Vanderbilt. When they finally decided to start again, it took them a long time to be competitive.
Georgia tech was also in the SEC and made the same mistake!!! Love Ga T's fight song ramblin wreck from Georgia Tech----Goes something like this---If I had a daughter I tell you what I'd do dress her up and to cheer for the gold and blue---but if I had a son sir I tell what I'd do he would yell to hell to Georgia like his daddy used to do!!!! well not quite---If I had a daughter I would dress her in white and gold and put her on the campus to cheer for the brave and bold--this is a little closer!!! but a great song!!! Ramblin wreck from Georgia Tech and a hell of a Engineer!!!!
Tulane was in the process of cutting back athletics because of costs and academic high brough nonsense . Makes it clear that these academic genius types often lack common sense. They would die to have home and home with the SEC West and basketball, and television revenue. Talk about killing the golden goose.
Georgia Tech left because of oversigning.
The University of the South was also in the original $EC. Located in Sewanee, TN, about an hour or so from Murfreesboro (near Chattanooga).
