Lets look at some positives(selling points) about UL:
1) Largest attendence in Football, baseball, and softball.(will be again in Men Basketball soon) in SunBelt and I know we beat La Tech in ALL these areas!!! and probably quiet a few CUSA schools.
2) Soon to be a Tier I National Research University like La Tech. This will also top some other schools wanting to get into CUSA.
3) One hour radius of population around and including Lafayette is more than La Tech and Shreveport.
4) Our budget is smaller than LaTech now but once they lose their WAC TV and conference monies they are more in line with UL.
5) As we elect a NEW US President the Big Oil monies will begin flowing to tunes not ever put upon UL before!!!!
It is done because currently each member school in the SEC receives approximately $15-17 million per year in TV revenue. By adding the Texas A&M and Mizzou market, schools will likely get close to $20 million per season from TV revenue.
The Sunbelt desperately needs to get into the Atlanta, Charlotte, San Antonio and Virginia(ODU) markets and hold onto FIU and UNT. If the Belt can somehow do that then each member school could see TV revenue increase by maybe 700% from $150K per member school to $1M per member school.
Bingo!!!! Grab UNC-C and gain the Charlotte market, grab USTA and gain the San Antonio market, grab ODU and get the Virginia market. We already have Ga State and the Atlanta market, work to retain FIU & UNT and we control some very major markets. This equal a lot more money for member schools. Also we schooled keep UALR and try to add Oral Roberts as Olympic sports member. We strengthen basketball and baseball with the add of these schools.
My dream football "Sun Belt" with 12 teams and the Championship game played in Either Jackson Miss or in New Orleans now that Ga St is in the Conference in football.....
East:
Middle Tenn
South Alabama
Troy
Western Kentucky
Georgia State
Georgia Southern
West:
UL
funroe
North Texas
Arkansas St
SMU
Tulane
as far a a Basketball Conf....it woulnt be too bad....
let SMU go back to the Southwest conference cuz u know it will come back one day. ULM can go back to the Southland. Tulane would be interesting though
Ok so what is wrong with teams Sun Belt has now?? Oh I understand the $$$ issues.but wich ones don't really "cut the mustard" so to speak?? If we got the right teams around us would people like/be satisfied with the SBC???
I think most people feel that if we kept UNT and FIU and added UTSA it would be a cool dozen for ESPN potential. Problem V, is you can pretty much paint UNT and FIU gone pecans. That changes a lot when you lose two top ten ESPN makets.
For the other schools in the Sun Belt it is not as big, but if CUSA gets the big contract they want, and LTU is in it that is the problem. Lots more dollars and recognition for your two biggest recruiting rivals, academic rivals in Louisiana. That is what the biggest worry is. There is no gurantee we gain another major market team.
In the current SBC assuming UNT and FIU gone we would need to keep ULM simply to have 8 current FBS teams, other than that I could say good ridence qucikly. UALR I could lose because of olympic sports only.
I like every other team in our conference. FAU needs to develop fans, but they have the alumni and money to do that over the long haul.
There is no football history of success for GSU, but they too have the money, alumni base, and population to succeed. They have already secured money to upgrade their olympic sports. I think we have a thread about bad history, and how fast it can change with the right hire.
I like the schools we have but would be nice to get some other markets which I agree about ESPN potential. Texas St, UTA and UTSA are all going to the WAC but that conference is in trouble I think so wouldn't it be good to get those teams??? At least UTSA. But I also think the SBC needs to be regional for reasons brought up in other threads. Lower travel costs for one. I think the SBC can be built into a conference not only locals are proud of.
