Thread: 2012 Poll: Conference Affiliation

I've said this a million times, but it bears repeating.

Even if we faced the Doomsday scenario with the Alliance going to 24 sachools and with UL being left outof the mix, we would still be a member of a conference that:

    1) is an FBS conference

    2) has at least 2 bowl tie-ins

    3) has Auto-bids in basketball and baseball

    4) has similar RPI numbers in basketball and baseball after the raid, as they did before the Aliance raids.

    5) has similar TV contract money after the raid, as they did before the Alliance raids

For the most part, the SBC will be minimally effected by this, as will UL.

Do not know what their history is, but they are moving to the FBS football level so in a year or so they will be competing for a championship. Trust me this will be about the Sun Belt. I suggest you take the link in the article around one this afternoon and watch it for youself.

So now you are a television consultant, or do you have an inside source. The number I am hearing if the mega conference comes to fruit is far more than the sum of both CUSA and MWC by a lot, and both those got a lot more than the Sun Betl ever had.

You must assume you are keeping the biggest markets South Florida and the Dallas Forth Worth. I am not so sure you keep both or even Middle. Yes ESPN gives them credit for those markets, not as much as a BCS team but lots more than you seem to think. We already lost DU a major market in baseketball not that I am complaining, but we ESPN looks at those things.

That's like putting lipstick on a pig as far as I'm concerned. If UL is left behind in the Sunbelt while UNT, MTSU, FIU, and possibly Ark ST join La Tech in securing invitations from the Alliance, the Cajun athletic program will take a huge hit. Don't kid yourself, this Alliance thing could possibly be the worst thing that has ever happened to UL athletics.

When you say the Alliance you mean the Conf USA Mountain West merger?? What happened to the WAC Conf USA combo that was posed to happen?? I think these mega conferences will eventually fail and they will go back to regional conferences

Ok here is the deal, it was never the WAC/CUSA. It started out as an agreement to play each other between CUSA and MWC. Then they could not shed thier contracts between Fox and ESPN so they decided to merge into a super conference of 18-24 schools. Both have eight schools so they needed to look for additions.

They announced this new Conference before they did their homework. Turns out that if they disband the old conferences they wlll only have one automatic NCAA basketball bid, and other sports like baseball. That was something they should have realized from the get go. Then they were made aware by the NCAA if they disbanded the schools conferences would lose the NCAA money their teams had built up, and that money would go to the teams that earned the victories, like say Memphis. They put the disbandment and merger on hold and are looking into all options.

Gotcha. And basically it is a football move as that is the money sport but yes it does affect the other sports

I don't understand why people are in such a hurry to get out of the SBC Which UL should be ruling every year in every sport, to go to another conference which will be that much tougher to compete in & ever win. Do folks think this will help attendance numbers rise to the level that it will increase budgets & make it easier to compete for conference championships? I don't see this in UL's near future or it being good for their near future benefits. In fact I don't see a move like this hleping UL's status for while.
