2012 Poll: Conference Affiliation

Academics should play a role in conference affiliation, but it usually doesn't. Boise State has the academics of a truck driving school, yet they're Big East bound. Schools like ULM and Troy State will be around as long as the Sunbelt Conference exists. The only way to sever the ties that bind us is to leave the Sunbelt. I believe a new conference could be formed out of the best of the SBC and the eastern WAC schools that would allow us to accomplish this. That is what I wish UL, ASU, MTSU, FAU, USA, WKU, LTU, UTSA, and TX ST would do.

You can't do that because you'd lose the automatic bids to tournaments (i.e. coaches). I'm sure the BCS conferences felt the same way about some of their weaker members at one time or another or added an alternate choice when they expanded.

When a block of some of the original WAC members bolted and formed the Mountain West they surrendered bowl and broadcast revenue for several years. We can't wait out something like that out like BYU, Utah, Air Force, San Diego State, Wyoming, UNLV, and New Mexico did.

The only thing you can control is what you're doing. I'd like to do what you're suggesting but I think your only options are to try to get into another conference or work to build up the conference you're in.

The Sun Belt board posted that both MWC & CUSA visited UTSA this week for possible membership. If I am not mistaken, they visited N Texas a few weeks ago. Up next, Louisiana??? Probably not. However, the recent very positive national pub in SI and SB Nation can't hurt. One can only hope that Dr. S and Scott are actively pursuing and have invited them to visit.

Because people view us the same as ULM. Plus this is about markets and football.

Our markets are not good and La Tech is perceived to have a much better football program then us. (and they do have a much better football program than us .)

Also, our budget is incredibly small and our football facilities aren't very good.

We are not in the conversation unless something massive is going on behind the scenes. Which I doubt.
