Brawl: Zachary, Teurlings barred from playoffs

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A Louisiana High School Athletic Association sportsmanship committee says a bench-clearing brawl on March 17 means neither Teurlings Catholic nor Zachary high school can get into the 2012 baseball playoffs.

The Advocate reports that both schools also are on probation through 2013, and must pay a $200 fine and part of the cost for Thursday's hearing in Baton Rouge.

The schools have 15 days to appeal the ruling of the committee headed by LHSAA Assistant Executive Director Keith Alexander.

Both coaches were suspended for their team's next regular-season game and must attend an LHSAA handbook certification course. Both coaching staffs must take a 14-day online sportsmanship course from the National Federation of High School Associations. A total of 11 fans are barred from games.
