Seth Dufrene likes The Wetlands golf course a lot ... even more so after Tuesday.
He also likes the Lafayette area ... a good thing, considering the city figures to be home for his collegiate golf career over the next few years.
Dufrene, a verbal commitment to play for UL's Ragin' Cajun squad, showed he could handle championship play Tuesday when he threw a three-under-par 69 at the rest of the 94-player field at the Louisiana Trusted Choice Big "I" Junior Classic.
The Luling and Hahnville High product holds a three-stroke lead over the field entering today's final 18 holes over the 6,831-yard gold-tee layout at The Wetlands.
"This course actually fits my game pretty well," said Dufrene, who notched four birdies and a lone bogey in Tuesday's opening round of the statewide junior event. "It's long and wide open and I'm pretty long, but the big thing was that I kept it in play and my putting's improved a lot lately."
Dufrene's closest pursuers included Maurice's Mick Huffman, who leads the boys age 14-15 division and is tied for second overall after an even-par 72. David Wiggins of Bossier City, in the boys 16-18 division with Dufrene, had the day's only other even-par round.
