LAFAYETTE - The annual Cingular Wireless Cajun Cup, billed as "The Original Cajun Running Festival," hits the streets of Lafayette today.

The event serves as a primary fund-raiser for the UL track and field program and kicks off at 8 a.m. at Cajun Field with more than 1,000 runners taking part.

"This is a huge event for us," said Ragin' Cajun track coach Lance Veazey. "It's our top fund-raising event, and the people that help us put this together are the ones that keep our program going."

The event includes a 10-kilometer event beginning at 8 a.m. and a one-mile "fun-run" beginning at 8:15. Runners may still register for today's race between 6-7:30 a.m. in the Cajun Field parking lot.
