Thread: Pitching philosophy (determining starters)

  1. Default Pitching philosophy (determining starters)

When I see teams lose on a fairly regular basis on Friday, but come back to take weekend series this question runs through my mind . . .

Do you know of any coaches who start their 3rd best pitcher on Friday, best pitcher on Saturday, 2nd best pitcher on Sunday?

I remember UNO doing it recently, I'm sure I've heard of other teams doing it to, sometimes it works, sometimes it backfires, I'd say stick with the way we do it. Our strength is usually pitching, and that allows us the best chance possible to set the tone friday night which can translate over the entirety of a series. Remember, you cant win a series on saturday unless you win the game on friday.

Some teams will backwards pitch when they think that is their best chance to win 2...or maybe even just 1. They will pretty much kiss off the Friday game...keeping their best pitcher for Saturday...and, in some cases, maybe even Sunday.

It depends in this level most of the starters are gonna be about the same talent wise but with different strengths and weaknesses the plan is to start out strong on friday to set the mood for the rest of the weakend but each different starter would do different on different teams because of the match ups(amount or righties and lefties)

Skip Bertman lived off of that. Tony WILL NOT do it because Robism #278 is "the way to beat a good arm is countering with a good arm". Of course that leads right into Robisms #1 and 2 about "pitch it, play defense and get the timely hit".
I thought that there times that we should have 'sacrificed' the Friday game so to speak, but that sends a message to the pitcher that he is being put out there to get beat.

I don't know if this is the case with Southern Miss, but it looks like we're going to lose the weekend series after winning the Friday game rather handily.
