Two Lafayette Parish Correctional Center Inmates being held on felony charges were able to overpower two deputies and escape from custody shortly after 1:30 on Saturday morning. Kevin Gildhouse 22 years old who was in custody for First Degree Murder and Tony Jackson (previously reported as Johnson) 29 years old in custody for armed robberies in Lafayette and St Martin Parish as well from the State of Florida escaped out of the facility. The deputies say that the inmates did produce a make shift weapon (crude cutting instrument) to execute the escape but neither of the deputies were injured and the weapon has not yet been recovered. Through investigative leads and under the direction of the LPSO Intelligence Unit investigators with the Lafayette Police, Lafayette City Marshal, US Marshal's Fugitive Task Force and the Sheriff's Office were able to locate and take both subjects back into custody near the intersections of Ambassador Caffery Parkway and Robley Drive. Gildhouse was located at 6:39 AM the Super One Store and Jackson was at the Valero Fuel Station captured at 705 AM. The investigative effort continues and the facts will surface with time, it is clear that there is much more investigating to do to determine what actually occurred but the most important task is now complete and that was the re-incarceration of these two suspected felons without any injuries. Both inmates have been charged with Aggravated Escape.
As the investigation continues additional questions will be answered and released to the media.
