Future Sun Belt members? Any truth to this? Or pure speculation?

  3. UL Baseball Re: Baseball RPI....

Give LTU about 95% if not accepted in the Alliance, and the two Texas schools about 75%, Georgia school 25% depending on defections in the Sun Belt.

I think the Texas schools are more like 40%, Georgia state like 20$, and App state like 8%

Well if this does happen, I think adding Texas State and UTSA to the Belt would be positive for baseball. Both those schools are very competitive.

  6. This is so COOL Re: Baseball RPI....

Benson wants 12 teams football. That being the case with no defections LTU makes 11 and we still need one more school. NMSU would make 12 for football and we still have a 12 team basketball conference. So all in all a lot depends on LTU & what NMSU might want.

While the RPI at this point in the season has too small of a sample size to produce anything really meaningful, last night's game vs. McNeese State (and the opponent results thus far) are illustrative of how impactful OWP is to a team's RPI.

Going into the game, UL had an RPI of .605. This was due to a tremendous OWP of .6511. Going into last night's game, every Cajun opponent had a winning record in terms of the Cajuns' OWP calculation, except Alcorn State. How good is an OWP of .6511? Let's just say that it would have ranked #1 in the country last season ... by a comfortable margin. Last season ...

    - Georgia had the #1 OWP (.6246) and used it to achieve an RPI ranking of 15, despite going 33-32 on the year.
    - Florida came in at #2 with an OWP of .6230, using it to achieve the #1 RPI ranking in the country.
    - North Carolina came in at #3 with an OWP of .6141, using it to achieve the #3 RPI ranking in the country.

Despite the win over McNeese State, their OWP of .2727 (3-8 record) knocked the Cajuns' OWP from .6511 to .6220. The Cajun RPI fell from .6050 to .6020.

How good is an RPI of .6020? It would have resulted in an RPI ranking of #9 last season. As the sample size increases, the actual RPIs (W/L records) become much more normalized. The Cajuns are receiving serious lift from teams that are contributing OWPs well in excess of what was the best OWP in 2011. Eight of the Cajuns' 13 games have OWP in excess of the #1 OWP of 2011 (.6246). In the case of Gonzaga, that component of the Cajuns' OWP can only go down. Gonzaga has a perfect record (10-0, 1.0000). But it is not the records that are averaged, but the winning percentages (the # of games is irrelevant). Hence, any losses by Gonzaga will result in a Gonzaga OWP of significantly less than 1.

Since the WAC is all but dead as a football conference the two Texas schools are much better than 40% to join the SBC.

    Brian,

Is our OWP affected by our OOWP? In other words, if our opponents are playing superior competition as opposed to inferior competition and are winning does this help our RPI? I mean it seems like common sense but I'm just not sure what is actually weighed into the equation and I'm sure you have the answer to that.

OOWP is something like 25% of the formula but I believe that's as far as it goes.

Thanks seehard... I figure we should fair well in this for the long run this season, I really like our OOC schedule this year. We have some solid opponents. I mean assuming they keep winning and are as competitive as in years past, we have set ourselves up nicely to be able to get some quality wins. Love the Tulane home and home and back at LSU, Southern Miss, Houston home and home, and we can't undervalue the quality win that was against Wichita State to open the season... they are a perennial tournament team.

I'd say Texas State rather than NMSU. Closer, and the facilities are top notch.
