Thread: ROUX: Brazoswood’s Brittany Cuevas coming to UL

  1. UL Softball ROUX: Brazoswood’s Brittany Cuevas coming to UL

CLUTE — With a fastball that can travel 70 mph, Brazoswood’s Brittany Cuevas is putting a punctuation on her stellar career for the Lady Bucs.

In her four seasons on the varsity squad, Cuevas has put up impeccable numbers. Against District 24-5A rival Pearland on April 11, Cuevas struck out 25.

“I was really calm,” Cuevas said. “I don’t know why, because I usually get nervous. It was senior night and everything just fell into place. I was out there on the mound and there was no pressure until the 10th inning.”

A double by Brazoswood’s Kristen Kappler in the 10th frame eventually pulled out a 1-0 win for the Lady Bucs. The win also clinched the district crown for Brazoswood.

“Before the game our coach always puts us through an exercise where we lay down and calm down and just visualize ourselves doing something good,” Cuevas said. “That game she told us to visualize one of our teammates doing something good. Katie Fleming came up to me and told me I’d get 21 strikeouts. She told me, ‘so you’d better get 21 strikeouts,’ and I go, ‘yeah, Katie, that’s gonna happen.’

“But when I got the 21st strikeout, I just looked at her and she’s like ‘I called that.’ It was awesome and I didn’t expect it, especially a team of the caliber of Pearland.”

With a choice of five pitches in her arsenal — a fastball, change up, rise, drop and screwball — the senior is 17-3 with 204 strikeouts and an 0.50 ERA this year.

Cuevas said she never imagined she could reach this level, standing out in a game she once considered as only something to keep her busy.

I am pretty sure DaddyCajun found the story here and brought it over there, which I do the reverse of all the time so it's no big deal. We share UL news.

I mentioned to Stevie P this morning on his radio show how the jump to D1 was big but how can anyone not be impressed with 5 pitches and a 70 mph fast ball.

Steve said it is equivalent to a 95mph MLB fast ball.

Turbine hit it on the head, I did a little cut and paste job from the article and posted it on both sites.

  5. UL Softball Seniors lead Lady Bucs

Another senior who has come up big is standout pitcher Cuevas.

“As a captain, I know what not to do and how not to try to motivate people,” Cuevas said. “I am more conscience of how I talk to our underclassmen because I don’t want to come across as negative. We just try to treat them as equals.”

Cuevas plans to pitch at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in the fall. Posting a 20-3 record heading into the Pearland series, Cuevas has surrendered just one run in four playoff victories.

Shari Sigur - she is from Lafayette High
Amanda Hill - she is from Texas not sure much about her though

I'm sure that Tankersley can take the mound again to if needed. She pitched well her freshman year going 10-1 with a 1.36 era.

Lady Bucs keying in on solid performance

AUSTIN — Close calls have become a way of life for the Lady Bucs. Most, however, have gone their way and they are hoping that trend continues for a couple more games.

Brazoswood (31-3) plays a Class 5A state semifinal game at 5 p.m. today versus Garland (33-2) at Charlene and Red McCombs Field on the campus of the University of Texas. The other semifinal contest, scheduled for 8 p.m., will have defending state champ Keller (33-3) matched up with Spring Branch Smithson Valley (26-1).

Winners meet in the state final at 8 p.m. Saturday.

In six playoff games thus far, the Lady Bucs have scored 13 runs and only given up two.

With a dominant pitcher on the mound in Brittany Cuevas (23-3) and a head coach with state championship experience in Laura Oltman, the Lady Bucs seem set to challenge for a state crown.

“We’ve been preparing like we have for other teams and telling our players that we believe they can beat Garland, which they can,” said Oltman, who guided Sweeny to a Class 3A state title in 1996. “We tell them what type of team Garland is and what they must do to get by them.

“I know this type of atmosphere even though it has been 10 years. It is like spirit week, but it is fun.”

Cuevas has been solid in the playoffs, limiting Pearland to one run in a two-game sweep a week after keeping a high-powered Katy offense to one run. Earlier in the playoffs against Kingwood, Cuevas allowed just three hits in a two-game sweep. In the Lady Bucs first playoff game, she secured a no-hitter against Lamar.

Cuevas, who has committed to play college ball with the University of Louisiana-La. has 261 strikeouts on the season in 180 innings of work. Her ERA is 0.39.

“We’ve pretty much been doing the same that we have during the season,” Cuevas said. “I feel comfortable, but it really hasn’t sunk in yet.”

Amanda Hill is from Tomball, a perennial 5A softball power in Texas.

  12. Default Season over

Her next stop will be UL

"Brazoswood ace Cuevas was rolling up until the fifth, striking out six of the first seven batters she faced.

The only hitter to put a bat on the ball to that point was Brianna Love, who bashed a triple to center field in the second frame. Cuevas came right back and struck out the next two Lady Owls, to strand Love at third. Love had another triple later in the game, becoming the first Class 5A player to do so at the state tournament.

In the Garland half of the fifth, Cuevas struck out the first two batters she faced — one looking at strike three and the other swinging away. Krystal Huey then managed a hit to center field on a 2-2 count to keep the inning alive and Frashekia Knight followed with a single. Garrison then drove in the first run of the game with a third consecutive single.

With runners on second and third bases, Vanessa Vice singled on the first pitch offered by Cuevas, bringing in two more runs."
