I'm sure that Tankersley can take the mound again to if needed. She pitched well her freshman year going 10-1 with a 1.36 era.

"Brazoswood ace Cuevas was rolling up until the fifth, striking out six of the first seven batters she faced.

The only hitter to put a bat on the ball to that point was Brianna Love, who bashed a triple to center field in the second frame. Cuevas came right back and struck out the next two Lady Owls, to strand Love at third. Love had another triple later in the game, becoming the first Class 5A player to do so at the state tournament.

In the Garland half of the fifth, Cuevas struck out the first two batters she faced — one looking at strike three and the other swinging away. Krystal Huey then managed a hit to center field on a 2-2 count to keep the inning alive and Frashekia Knight followed with a single. Garrison then drove in the first run of the game with a third consecutive single.

With runners on second and third bases, Vanessa Vice singled on the first pitch offered by Cuevas, bringing in two more runs."

AUSTIN - For a time, Brittany Cuevas was as dominant as ever, zipping through Garland's lineup.

Brazoswood's ace had all the right pitches and did everything the Buccaneers needed — with the exception of one inning. But in the fifth the dominance ended, and it happened fast, as the Buccaneers lost 3-0 to Garland in the Class 5A state tournament on Friday.

"I'm not sure what changed (from the first four innings to the fifth)," said Cuevas, who struck out 12 and allowed seven hits. "I just know it was fast and it was quick and before I knew it, we were down."

After Cuevas sat down two batters for her ninth and 10th strikeouts, the Owls struck swiftly with four swings, stringing together four singles and producing three runs to end Brazoswood's bid for a second title at McCombs Field.

The Bucs (31-4) and the Owls (34-2) battled to a standstill until the fifth as both pitchers moved quickly through the opponent's lineup.

The first seven outs Cuevas (23-4) recorded were strikeouts, while Garland's Tomi Garrison (23-1) didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning. Cuevas set down the first four batters she faced with strikeouts and took a three-hitter to the fifth.

With two outs, Krystle Huey, Fra'shekia Knight, Garrison and first Vanessa Vice hit singles for a 3-0 lead. Garrison's single to right-center scored the first run, then Vice followed with a two-run single.

Meanwhile, Garrison continued to keep the Bucs off balance, finishing with a three-hitter and only once allowing a runner past fiirst base.

Despite the fact that the Bucs were unable to come away with their second state title, they left a proud group.

"It was awesome," Cuevas said. "Even after the game, just sitting their looking at my teammates, it was still awesome. To have the opportunity to be here is just amazing. I'm so proud of this team."

  4. UL Softball Kliesing hopes to get her team to state tourney like Cuevas did

Rhiannon Kliesing is thrilled that fellow pitcher Brittany Cuevas is graduating. The junior pitcher from Pearland has seen enough of Cuevas and the Brazoswood Buccaneers during the last two seasons.

This year, the Lady Bucs kept the Oilers from realizing their dream of advancing to the Class 5A state softball tournament. Cuevas and her teammates made the trip instead after she went toe to toe with Kliesing in the Region III-5A finals and helped lead Brazoswood to a pair of extra-inning victories and a series sweep.

"I'm really glad (that Cuevas is leaving), because next year we'll have a really good chance of beating Brazoswood," Kliesing says of her District 24-5A rivals.

Competition is what Kliesing and Cuevas — the Chronicle's co-players of the year — thrive on, and compete relentlessly is what they did every time they faced each other. Although they are opponents on the field, they have a healthy respect for one another.

"Every game we play against each other, I know that she's going to throw a great game, and I'm going to have to do my best to match her," Kliesing said. "I get nervous, because I know that's the best competition that I'm going to see all year."

    Cuevas feels the same way.

"You know it's going to be a 1-0 or 2-1 game," she said. "I know I have to be on my game, because she's going to be on her game. I have to equal what she does."

Brazoswood and Pearland relied heavily on their star pitchers, and Cuevas and Kliesing responded with one clutch performance after another. Cuevas, who is heading to Louisiana-Lafayette, built up a high level of expectation after impressive sophomore and junior seasons that ended with playoff losses to 2004 state champion and 2005 Region III-5A finalist Elkins. She had dreams of taking the Lady Bucs to the state tournament, but she wasn't sure if it was possible.
