Thread: For non-Softball fans

    Default For non-Softball fans

I was just wondering what reasons fellow Cajun fans have for not supporting our nationally acclaimed softball program. I've been a fan of the program for near 30 years and usually see the same 300 or 400 fans at every game. This is just something I've been wanting to ask. Especially in the midst of our 13-0 start and #12 national ranking.

Please, just some discussion why you personally don't support the program.

BTW, we have a doubleheader Saturday at 1:30 and then again on Sunday at 12:30. All the other winter/springs sports teams are out of town so we're the only game in town.

I'll bite. But I don't know if you'll like my answer. FWIW I usually make it to a couple games a year. And I'm very proud of the program we have and very thankful for the Lotiefs for what they give to UL. And I'll also add that compared to other colleges our softball attendance is just about the best in the nation.

    - No marketing or promotion
    - Many games occur at odd times
    - Many games occur at the same time as UL baseball games
    - Many of our visiting opponents couldn't beat a lot of our local high school teams
    - Women aren't as athletic as men which makes for an inferior form of entertainment to other sports
    - Few people know much or care much about the game of Softball

I'm okay with some of your answers, except when you exposed your dum@ss about many of our visiting teams couldn't beat a lot of our local high school teams. That just made you an effing idiot in my eyes. I heard that several times about our football team in the past. Acadiana could beat the CAJUNS. Carencro could beat the CAJUNS. I used CAJUNS to make myself feel good. You know what they would really say!

By the way, you make it sound like the softball team always wants to play give me games. DUDE, There is not many, so called "elite softabll teams" that want to come here to play a game and get their @sses kicked. Put up some money CUZ and get those teams here. You mentioned baseball games as a reason for not going to a softball game , and I'm very much okay with that, but REALLY. How about some of those big names that come to the TIGUE. Maybe we can get the girls from the east to give of a home game and give us fewer HIGH SCHOOL TEAMS playing in the beautiful Lamson Park.

I guess ill bit too... I just absolutely hate the sport of softball, or baseball, and basketball too for that matter, so I generally don't attempt to attend games of those sports, has nothing to do with our teams or anything they are doing, I just can't stand to watch those sports

This is our 3rd tourney. None of those games have been at "odd times".
3rd tourney. None of those games have conflicted with baseball.
You could say that about some of last year's opponents. None of this year's.
That's like saying I never watched Chris Everett play tennis because she wasn't as athletic as Jimmy Connor.
The game is close enough to baseball that just a thimble full of effort from a new fan and you can know the game.

Damn, y'all asked he answered. Get off his sack, if you like to watch softball then go, don't act like he is the minority of the country who doesn't watch softball. So the people who go watch our nationally ranked softball team, do you attend our nationally ranked ski team's meets? Why not? Because you don't like to watch people ski, just like some people don't like watching softball.

I live to far away to go to any Cajun games. The NO Bowl was my first in years. I actually would like to see them play and I am proud of them!

I could get into it if they played on TV and the national media cared more about the sport.

Like I said I figured y'all wouldn't like my answer. But it's an honest answer.

Gator I hesitate to answer a guy like you but my wife played High School softball and I was there for every game. So I got a chance to see plenty of High School softball. And I stand by my comment that there are some local high school softball teams (Teurlings, Parkview Baptist, Kaplan) that could easily beat some of the softball teams that I've seen at Lamson Park; the teams that UL beats 20-0. And I never ever said UL wants to play give me games. Don't put words in my mouth. They do everything they possibly can to get good opponents to play at Lamson Park.

CajunRed, there's a reason why on a non-world cup year 40,000 people show up to watch our so-so US men's soccer team and 5,000 show up to watch our powerhouse US women's team. There's a reason why 17,000 people go to NBA games but 4,000 go to WNBA games. And there's a reason why 2,500 people go to UL baseball games and only 400 go to UL Softball. I think it's because women aren't as athletic as men so there isn't as much interest in women athletics. But if you disagree I'd like to hear your opinion as to why. And I know that it only takes minimal effort to learn softball but that still doesn't mean people are going to care much or care to know much about softball.

Most of the so-called "minor" sports (i.e., softball, baseball, Track & field, soccer, golf, tennis, etc.) don't have a major following or interest from the general population. Why is that? Who knows. It varies from one individual to another. But it is the truth. I wish all of our sports had large fanbases and big attendance numbers. But the fact is, they do not. And it pretty much holds true across a wide swath of the US. Our softball team is one all Cajun fans can be, and, as best as I can tell, are, very proud of. Doesn't mean that we all make it out to Lamson. I've been a few times and really enjoyed the experience. I wish I could make it out there more often. But there are only so many different things I can do and limited funds to do them with. Having said all that, I back the softball team all the way and cheer them on as best I can - often by the radio.
