GREAT news for him... and for Cajun fans. I don't think he'll be the only free agent signed.
with the eagles weak wr spots sampy could make the team and get some playing time. Which would great for the program. it shows recruits that we can still get them to the league even though we are a smaller program
I think we have the issue of gettin people to the NFL covered already, but the more the better.Originally Posted by crazycajun

All of who start or play significant minutes.
If I am correct that probably puts Carencro High School as producing more NFL players than any other Lafayette area school.
Wade Richey 49ers/Ravens
Kevin Faulk Patriots
Cash Mouton Ravens
Bill Sampy Eagles
wow, thats great news with sampy! seriously, we're on our way up. this is good to hear!
He is currently with the Jaguars.Originally Posted by Hatch

He obviously has a chance.
Also Anthony Clement is on the roster of the NY Jets.
By most measurements, Bill Sampy is one of the best wide receivers in Louisiana Ragin' Cajun history.
Now he'll get the chance to prove himself against the best in the business after signing a free agent contract on Monday with the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles.
Philadelphia, which parted ways with mercurial star Terrell Owens midway through the 2005 season, selected two receivers on Sunday in the NFL Draft.
The Eagles chose Michigan's Jason Avant in the fourth round and former Colorado standout Jeremy Bloom - coming off a second career as a ski star - in Round 5. They quickly added Sampy to the mix after the selection process was finished.
"I was waiting on a call on Sunday," Sampy said. "I was not expected to go on Saturday (rounds 1-3). Jacksonville said they thought about picking me in the fifth round, and if not they would sign me as a priority free agent. And Green Bay drafted three receivers.
"I felt my options were better with Philadelphia. They released Terrell Owens and cut Todd Pinkston. They have five wide receivers on the roster, and two of them are playing in (NFL) Europe. They drafted two, and then there's me.
"It looks like they'll go to camp with 10 receivers and keep six."
Sampy finished his Cajun career with 155 receptions (No. 4 in UL history) for 1,988 yards (No. 5) and nine touchdowns. His best season was 2004, when he caught 57 passes for 776 yards and six scores.

exactly, it helps to do it every year and i'm glad sampy kept it going. there was way too big of a gap between the first two and the second two. If i remember correctly the gap between those players we were probably the worst program in the country!Originally Posted by DeadRed
i don't look at it a only six people in the pros what i said was there is too big a gap of between jake and brandon, and tillman and taylor. which during this gap we were the worst program in the country. call it frame of mind if you want but we sucked for ten fricken years and i was there during that. So don't tell me as long as we think we are good we will be b/c every year for ten years was our year to turn it around! And as to your small business comment thank you for making my point for me. We are the smaller business right now that is growing to be larger!Originally Posted by DeadRed
The gap was 4 years. jake 97, brandon 98' clement 98, taylor-tillman 03, stamps 04, cc 05, sampy 06.Originally Posted by crazycajun
And we are not a small program. msu, nsu, slu, they are all "small programs". Over 300 teams are 1-A basketball/baseball and of those on 107 or so are I-A football. Give me a break.
You seem to forget in the late 60's we were in the "small college" division. After that time we moved up and then in the 80's the rest of our so called equals (listed above) were scared to navigate the 1-A waters. We were not and our enrollment has continued to grow and so has our community support. Even in 1989 Northeast won the 1-AA National Championship and the Cajuns beat them in Monroe.
You think small and you prove it with every post on this subject.
"Catch of the day
Rookie receiver Bill Sampy, with cornerback Donald Strickland glued to him, made an incredible catch in the right corner of the end zone on a nicely thrown ball by Jeff Garcia."

Bill's already making a good impression in Philly and may become a legitamate target for McNabb. Great news for the Cajun football program...
