Interesting. Is this your own observation & something you've confirmed from following the stats, or just coach speak?
I am seriously wanting to know which. While we're discussing this I have a question for you if you were at the game Saturday night. I can't recall a single high pick being set during that ball game. If Coach Marlin is so great, how come his team doesn't seem to be able to ever run pick & roll or at least have his big man come out to set high picks for his point guards? This would help cut their turnover ratio down somewhat.
Personal observation. I don't base my opinion off of one game. There have only been a select few games that I have missed over the past few years and that was due to work.
But anyway, guess what? They did run the pick and roll with Coleby....there was a nice pass made and a dunk. There was one from Perez and a few from Payton. Maybe ulm made adjustments and we didnt. Blame that on coaching.
We have two pure shooters on the team (Perez and AMT)
When they are on they are deadly. When not its pretty bad
I'm not certain the argument about what position Payton should be playing makes a lot of sense given how guard-oriented offenses have become in college basketball. The way that most teams play in today's game there isn't a lot of difference between a scoring guard and a small forward.
Problem with Payton is that, like most 17-18 year old players, he thinks he can beat everyone off the dribble penetration. He's athletic enough to where that often works when he's up against the level of guard play we see in the Sun Belt. And until he develops a decent mid-range jump shot, you see a lot of the same stuff happen to him that we saw in Saturday's game when ULM just collapsed on him every time he tried to drive in the lane.
Payton wasn't picking. He is the POINT GUARD. Coleby set a high screen for him at the top of the key and rolled to the basket...nice pass...dunk.
There was one early in the second half and another towards the end when things got out of hand
People are collapsing, b/c they don't have to respect shooters.
