People do what they need to do to feed their families. Being a pawn broker you do deal with less fortunate people but its an honest profession. Its not like they are stealing from anyone or on the streets selling drugs. Just saying...

Horsedodo, they are friggin crooks. I am convinced along with many others, that pawnbrokers are crooks and I would not ever use one for anything and many people agree with me just as many may agree with you.
I've walked into just one pawn shop my whole life.
Please explain to me one thing a pawnbroker does that would make him a "crook." Name just one thing. Thanks.
They know a person who comes into their pawn shop are much more than likely to be "down on their luck" and in real need of extra money in order to not have their electricity or water or whatever turned off or whatever other extreme financial situation they may be in and the pawn broker will offer them as very little as they possibly have to and play on that person's desperation to get the goods they have brought into their shop for pawn. The pawn broker will then turn around and make a very nice profit on those goods that they just PURCHASED or they will place the goods into a 30 or 90 day hold knowing that the person will probably not be able to get the money to come back and redeem them because they were broke to begin with, so therefore, the pawn broker has not broken any of man's laws however its a moral issue, a huge moral issue. I think any person who takes advantage of someones desperation and is willing to profit from it are just jackasses taking advantage of others. Just watch the cheesy smiles on the faces of the "Pawn Stars" folks and the other pawn brokers on TV knowing they just obtained something that they could have offered and given a little more for in order to help that person out a little bit better, but they decided to obtain the goods for as little as possible for their own greed and gain. Free enterprise you might say, my butt.............
Its just a crooked business period.
If the pawn broker were an honest person they would not have a pawn shop but a consignment shop and they would let the selling customer place a price on their own goods for shoppers to possibly purchase and if the goods did sell, the shop owner would take a pre determined percentage of the sell price or even purchase the goods themselves and then maybe resell for a better profit but they would have let the original owner of the goods make their own price for them.
Much more fair to everyone and no moral issues overstepped.
All that text and you didn't answer my question. But whatever.
So why don't poor people just go to consignment shops instead? It's because they need the money and they need the money fast. With a consignment shop they might not get their money for months so that's a horrible idea. Do you see why? That doesn't help when the electric bill is due. And the person who owns the consignment shop would go bust because no one would ever go to a store with a bunch of random crap in it that isn't sold at a good discount. Your consignment shop wouldn't benefit anyone, especially the poor and that's why the poor don't go to consignment shops.
For some reason you feel it's immoral for a business to buy a product for $5 and resell it for $10 even though that's what most businesses do. Apple builds their iPhones for $200 and sells them to AT&T for $400. Are they crooks too? Of course Apple sells their iPhones immediately.
But the basic fact is if two people mutually agree on a price for an item then is a fair price regardless of what 1TheDon1 thinks that price should be. And there's nothing crooked about that.
I see your point on the consignment shop but obviously you are either a pawn broker or just a plain ole crook yourself. If you cannot find my answer in all that text that I typed then its pretty apparent that you dont want to see the answer. Also, I never said it is immoral for businesses to buy products and resell for profits, that is exactly what my company does and I have been quiet profitable from doing so, however, I pay the asking wholesale prices asked of me. Now, what I stated was exactly how pawn shops take advantage of others and pay as little as possible and that is because of their own greed, want and gain. Maybe if the customer asked $10 for their goods and their goods were actually going to be sold by the pawn broker for $30, if indeed the pawn broker bought them then I would not feel so bad towards pawn brokers if the pawn broker would have paid the customer the $10 that they asked, but of course the pawn broker will only pay less than the fair asking price of $10 and so that is my whole point. They are CROOKS. That is how I feel regardless of your debate and you will not change my mind and I could care less how you feel about pawn brokers period just as you probably could care less of how I feel about them so just pawn your goods or stick up for those that take advantage of others, that will at least let me know what kind of person you probably are.
Here's a few quotes for you............. It sounds as though at least one of them might fit you very well.
“There is one way to find out if a man is honest; ask him! If he says yes you know he's crooked.”
“To crooked eyes truth may wear a wry face.”
"He who befriends a man whose conduct is vicious, whose vision impure, and who is notoriously crooked, is rapidly ruined.”
Maybe this one......
“Do not be very upright in your dealings for you would see by going to the forest that straight trees are cut down while crooked ones are left standing.”
Just saying, Swamp People is just as staged as the other shows. That one show where the two ladies went to "Chad O's" place to get rid of a nuisance alligator was all staged. My g/f's family knows Chad, (I don't think anybody calls him "Chad O" except those women on the show) and from what she told me, they had put a gator on his property, and it really wasn't bothering anybody.
I can't stand watching it.
You need to get a little education before you post these ridiculous things. First, pawn shops are another form of legal business that has been around for years. Second, no one forces anyone to go into a pawn shop. People willingly go in there and make a deal that they deem fair. If the deal is not fair they can leave and go elsewhere. Third, pawn shops are out to turn a profit just like any other business. Why would they give someone top dollar for an item and then have it sit on the shelf for months and hope they can sell it to make only a couple of bucks?
When people are down and out a pawn shop is not the only answer but some choose that route. And crooks? If you really want to see crooks you should look at our federal government! People go in and make a deal so it's none of your business if you think it's fair or unfair.
Dude, you make yourself look childish when you abandon your argument and resort to ridiculous personal attacks. You're right. You obviously put it in your head a long time ago that pawnbrokers are dishonest criminals even though all logic says otherwise. And no common sense is going to change that. I just don't get people like you who choose to believe and defend such ridiculous things.
So, you are saying the pawn broker is the bad guy for taking advantage of a poor slob down on his luck about to get his power or water cut off? In that case it sounds like the power or water company is the bad guy for cutting the poor slob's water or power off without giving the slob a break. I've watched every episode of Pawn Stars & I can tell you that the absolute most used reason the people on that show go to the pawn shop is to get money for gambling. I would imagine there are a few who also get money for drugs, booze, etc.
Also, from watching the show, the biggest reason I see pawn brokers trying to make such a profit is because so many people walk into their stores trying to sell them counterfiet items for a fortune. Those people are crooks.
Bandwagon I agree with most of your post on this subject. I managed to maintian myself from commenting on the absurd post. Pawn shops offer a way to get short term money. People might get short term money with little or no fees and interest. Mostly they are not the poor slobs who have made bad choices since the first grade, they are people who have done all the right things.
As for those who are liquidating a valued product to the theives at the pawn shop. I believe there are auction houses, and internet sites to sell all sorts of stuff, there are garage sales for the less valued items.
Now I agree with your assement of virtually all government. They are thieves with the power of a gun and prison to make sure you accept your poor slob status regardless of what steps you have taken to better your lives.
Now for those with a social conern about bad folks. May I offer Troy and Hulk Hogan pimping Rent a Center. Now there is a racket, but again the victims all volunteer. The typical rental agreement calls for a 300% markup. they buy a television for a hundred bucks and rent it for three hundred. If you are fortunate to make all 18 months it is yours to keep.
IMO the role of government in all these things is to make sure that the contracts are plain and simple.
Finally for those who are worried about the pawn vicitims. Their only other option, since these folks would not allow them to barter their valuables, is a loan shark. We all kinda know that is not a way we want them to go.
