Wow, these ladies are on fire!
Yes they are but DePaul was awarded the championship due to some run bull. They should have played another game against DePaul and see who the champ is decided on the field.
OK some of you guys need to get a grip. They placed second based on rules in place before the tournament ever started. The run rule is the champ is based on run differential of common opponents. I am fine with winning all the games they were in. Ultimately these ladies are about regional, super regional, and possibly a national championship. They go to these tournaments to build their credentials and if they get a crown that is a nice bonus. I could have gone the opposite way.
I cannot dissagree a co championship would make more sense in a compressed tournament, but that is not the rules the Cajuns agreed to.
All these early season tournaments are just a great way to play lots of good competition quickly and cheaply. The person who holds up the trophy is meaningless quite frankly. The undefeated record is much much much more important.
Just a few points: DePaul and UL shared 3 opponents: They scored 16 runs vs. 2 against Winthrop, Miss St and Hofstra. We scored 16 but gave up 8. They shut out Winthrop and Hofstra. Overall, DePaul's best opponent (w vs. L) was U Mass with a 2-3 record. None with winning records. Overall, their opponents were 5-20. We won against two teams with winning tourn. records: Michigan and Boston U. So, they win tournament and we get some good games under out belt including our first win over Michigan in some time. Hitting and good fielding along with solid pitching really helped us. Need a third starting pitche - who will it be. It will be fun to see how we continue to play. Haack and Smith really came on. Loving it. By the way, Winthrop's only win was against Tennesee who had the MVP and MVPitcher. Go Winthrop. Wish we could have played Tennessee.
I did not set up the policies of the tournament, only said we have to live with it. And yes they won five games against the better teams and it will pay off a lot more than a trophy of little meaning.
It's a shame Christina Hamilton is out this season. I'm not saying Wallace isn't capable, but if we had Brignac and Hamilton this year with this offense, this team would be scary good. They may be scary good anyway, but with Ashley's injury history, and Wallace being a true frosh, I'm worried about pitching when it comes to the postseason.
Wallace is capable. She got her nose bloodied, which will make her stronger in the end. If you haven't seen her pitch, go see her this weeekend. I think she will be special at some point before years end. This teams offense will keep our pitching safe!
I also think Wallace is ahead of Hamilton at this point but I agree it is a shame we don't have her this season. If the defense keeps playing out of their minds and the offense holds fast we can make some noise. It will be nice next season to have a toughened Wallace for when Brignac is gone but man oh man this is the year it has to be
