Thread: Lets Fix Tigue Moore Field

  1. Default Re: Indoor Practice Facility

I am excited that they have finally started on the indoor facility, but what no one want to talk about is how badly our BASEBALL FIELD needs to be fixed....nothings been done since it was built and, i think we lost the possibility of a minor league coming to play a game here, they would not let the player get on the field in the condition its in, also the drainage was never done, Div I program!!!!!!! and a successful one, figure that out, someone help me out please.

Help me out here! Some of your statements need clarification. Drainage I understand. The others have me baffled.

I don't believe that is true. Grandstand chairbacks were added as I think those were originally bench seats. Also new bleachers along 1st and 3rd along with the brick backstops and walls. There have been improvements made. Could it be better? Sure, but it could also be a lot worse.

Dr. Authement has done a good job at what is really important and that is getting the academic side on a higher plane. It still needs to be improved but think how bad things would be if the foundation for academics did not have 125 million. By the way, the indoor facillity is because of Dr. Authement, this was his baby.
the reason i posted was not to bash anyone i am simply trying to point out how bad it is that needs to be corrected and one of the things that cause you to lose a good coach and we do have a good coach who is working his butt off trying to improve the park, it's not a complaint.....this is an area that people sometimes tend to overlook and i feel that someone needs to speak out and i don't see anything wrong with that or maybe you don't think baseball is all that important! let's keep it positive and sometimes on this board that's hard to do, and maybe you didn't know it but people get hurt running at fly balls out their because of holes other things in the outfield...come on guys lets raise an awareness, it benefits everyone.

I heard the field needs a complete overhaul, and that could run aprox 700k. The field has never been restored since it's completion, and we have some serious soil movement over the years. This has played havoc with the sprinkler system.

Robe verified at the Tuesday luncheon that they were starting on the field as soon as baseball season was over. They expect it to be available for fall ball. I know the outfield will be done and leveled with the infield, but I'm not sure if the infield will be done as well. This means new drainage and sprinkler system. I'll try to get a little more info at the next luncheon and pass it on.

It was talked about preseason, I don't remember who or exactly what was said but i do remember that the term the field has never been rested came up in the conversation. The soil movement that has occured is the outfield has visually sank to the point that it is now.

I do find that some of the context of you message is a bit negative or could be taken that way. I have a tremendous respect for you sir. I was attending games when your group and few others were there and we had a good team. That is an exageration of course but you guys are part of what makes it fun to be at the ballpark.

Nevertheless as we have found out the field is in for an overhaul at the end of this season. UL is a perennial power in the world of College baseball, okay that is what our field product is expected to be. UL may not be at that point but the corner is there and UL has a season ticket base that rivals a lot of the big schools. How shameful it would be to not have done the grandstands and patio boxes to fix the field. The grandstand was sold out of season tickets. I tried to buy some.

When the Tigue was built it was the grandstand only. UL have added lights, then some time later added the accomadations of bleachers down both lines. So for the comment that Baseball is not important to the University or the to US the fans is absolutely not right to say.

Here is the information I was quoting in the fisrt paragraph. I should have known it was the great Turbine who had posted it first and he had gone to Robe for an answer.

"Friday on 'Thinking Out Loud' coach Robichaux told me the chance of a minor league team making Tigue Moore Field its home is off.

The reason he gave on the air (there may be more) was the discrepancy in elevation between the infield and outfield which to my view is almost a full foot.

I'm not sure how this works but Robe said the Tigue has never rested and this has contributed to the relative sinking of the outfield. I suspect it would take a full summer and winter to correct the problem."

Now let's get through the remainder of the season and then next have a better and improved stadium.

This picture shows how high the infield is compared to the rest of the field.

I took this picture from about 15 feet behind (and between) 2nd and 3rd base. As you can see the ground is so low it completely blocks out the 7 foot high dugouts and the portions of the first row in the 1st base line bleachers.

I think he meant field not park.

This was a topic of conversation on Birds Eye View yesterday with Gerald Hebert.

It was mentioned that something has been done every year in and around the park but the field itself has been suffering.

Baseball while loved does not drive UL sports. Minor league teams are not a concern of UL. If Lafayette wants to use the Tigue to support a minor league team, let the city pay for the upgrades. I am in total agreement the Tigue needs a complete overhaul, and as a season ticket holder I along with others should expect to be responsible for a great deal of the costs. If we pay for the upgrades then any minor league team should not be in it. I well remember how the Cajun Dome was consumed by Ice Gator fans.

I think if a minor league team were to use the facility, it wouldn't have anything to do with the city. The university, and baseball in particular, would have to handle the approval and lease of the facility, with them being the recipient of any revenues generated. JMO

Well most of the time, these leases fall short of actually paying their way, and cities want them for whatever reason. That is why cities get involved, they upgrade facilities and then have a say in who plays in those facilities. I would hope we ignore that siren call ( http://thanasis.com/sirens.htm ) we don't need a shipwrecked ballpark.
