Volunteers spruce up space for UL athletes

A little bit of elbow grease and several buckets of paint helped transform the run-down academic center for athletes inside the University of Louisiana Conference Center into what volunteers hope will be a more welcoming environment for student athletes.
Volunteers cleaned, painted and repaired the computer lab, tutoring center and the athlete's lounge for three days this weekend.
"Just the paint alone has made such a difference," said Christy Alford, an academic counselor for student athletes. "It's definitely brightened up the room and made it feel a little more welcoming."
Gerald Hebert, coordinator of athletic development for the UL Alumni Center, spearheaded the project with the help of several sponsors, including hands-on help from Chase Bank, which donated supplies and labor.
