MITCHELL SIGHTING: Dwayne Mitchell, who ended a standout basketball career with UL last March, recently won a slam-dunk contest in the French basketball league in which he is playing this season.

Mitchell, a member of the Paris Basketball Racing team in France's Pro A league, was a second-round pick in the CBA draft by the (Yakima, Wash.) Sun Kings but chose to go overseas this season.

Highlights of the dunk contest are available online at www.youtube.com by searching "French slam dunk contest."

theAdvertiser said Dwayne won the slam dunk contest.
But according to what I saw in the video, it was the his opponent in the final, a guy named Guy, who won coz the final shot of the video show his name and slam dunk... some French words, and I guess that means Guy is the champion?

After seeing that video. Although I'm a young Ragin' Cajun fan, I can't think of a more impressive raw physical athlete than Dwayne. He was quick, strong, and had unbelievable leaping ability. I guess you would have to consider Brian Mitchell as an amazing athlete. Are there any other guys who would rank up with Dwayne as pure physical specimens. Maybe Figaro, Alonza Allen or someone else????? Any thoughts.

When Mitchell's Senior season was up in the air waiting for the NCAA to grant a 5th season, it was rumored that Mitchell was considering football. Could you imagine Mitchell playing TE at 6' 5" 225. With his quickness and leaping ability he would have made one hell of a pass catching TE or H-back.

  7. UL Basketball NBA Draft: Sometimes, the numbers do lie

For some, the news that Texas' Kevin Durant ranked 78th out of 80 players in athletic testing at this year's NBA predraft camp in Orlando was a red flag that could damage Durant's status as the draft's No. 2 prospect. The guy could not bench-press 185 pounds. But it was no red flag, according to league sources, for the folks who matter most: the Seattle SuperSonics, holders of the No. 2 pick. The team, apparently, is still enamored of Durant.

Instead, the Durant saga points to the relevance -- or, perhaps, irrelevance -- of the league's predraft testing, in which agility, speed, vertical leap and, yes, bench press are measured. It's an NFL-style mini-Combine designed to give teams established standards in each category rather than numbers culled on a workout-by-workout basis. But in the NBA, such numbers mean little. Last year, Brandon Roy ranked 30th in predraft testing. Dwayne Mitchell was No. 3. Roy went on to become the rookie of the year, and Mitchell did not play in the league. The previous year, Monta Ellis finished as the worst athlete in predraft measurements and dropped into the second round. But he averaged 16.5 points and 4.1 assists for the Warriors this season.

That would make sense, if it happens with Miami. I think Dwayne played in the Heat's summer league last year.
