I used to think Alonso Mourning had great arms, till I saw Dwayne Mitchell.

From the right angle his shoulders like they have implants.

“I think it’s a great organization I think they have some good guys on the team, Jason Kidd, Vince carter. They have a lot of veterans and I know that if I was granted the chance to come here that I’d be surrounded by some good guys and leaders that can help me along the way.”

      Ed Stefanski On Dwayne Mitchell:

“Terrific. NBA type of body, shot it well. He is a high-energy type of guy that I could definitely see getting drafted in the second round for someone to take a shot on.”

From ESPN.com, Mitchell was rated the third best overall athlete in the draft:

    Combine results:

While the height and weight measurements from the NBA predraft camp are interesting and relevant, NBA GMs and scouts also spend a lot of time dissecting the results of the NBA physical combine.

Last year Joey Graham (Raptors) rated as the top athlete in the draft, boosting his draft stock. Rashad McCants (Timberwolves) and Luther Head (Rockets) also finished in the top 10 and saw a nice little bump to their stock, too.

Players are asked to bench press 185 pounds as many times as they can, test their vertical jump two ways (no step and maximum) and run several drills to measure speed and lateral quickness.

For the fourth straight year Insider has obtained this confidential report from a league source.

North Carolina's David Noel tested as the top athlete in the draft. He was followed by Arkansas' Ronnie Brewer, Louisiana Lafayette's Dwyane Mitchell, Michigan's Daniel Horton, Memphis' Rodney Carney, Villanova's Randy Foye, Louisville's Taquan Dean, Georgetown's Brandon Bowman, Maryland's Nik Caner-Medley and UNLV's Louis Amundson.

St. Louis' Ian Vouyoukas, Denver's Yemi Nicholson, Bradley's Patrick O'Bryant, Oklahoma State's Frans Steyn and Texas' Brad Buckman tested as the worst athletes in the draft.

Strengths: Two-guard with excellent strength and versatility ... Very strong, explosive, athletic body ... Great body control, finishes well around the basket ... Uses a quick first step to get to the rim ... Ran the point guard position for the Raging Cajuns this year ... Extremely strong and athletic, able to take the ball up in traffic and finish ... Has the physicality to take the ball inside as a guard ... Good vision and passing ability for an off guard ... Big time rebounder ... Strong defender, racks up steals, good anticipation ability, quickness ... Crashes the boards hard ...

Weaknesses: Lacks great range and consistency on his outside shot ... Poor free throw shooter at under 60%, which is significant considering how often he gets to the line ... Extremely turnover prone. Some of that was due to the fact that he was asked to play point guard (which isn't his natural position) and carry most of the ball handling duties ... Body is almost overdeveloped where he may lose some flexibility and quickness, although it doesn't seem to stop him ...

  9. Default Watch for Mitchell in the second round of NBA Draft

Only a few months ago, the terms Dwayne Mitchell and the NBA Draft weren't used in the same sentence.

Now, there's a chance that Mitchell's name could resonate from the podium tonight.

"I've talked to a lot of teams ... the Spurs, Charlotte, recently the Knicks and the Rockets about a week ago," said University of Louisiana basketball coach Robert Lee. "From the people I talked to, I think he has a chance from the middle to the latter part of the second round."

The NBA holds its annual draft of amateur talent tonight, and the New Orleans native and former Ragin' Cajun standout has put himself into the draft picture with a series of strong workouts and camps since completing his senior season at UL.

The 6-foot-5 guard has worked out for at least six NBA clubs since late May - New Jersey, Cleveland, Washington, Houston, Detroit and Chicago. He also took part in both of the NBA's pre-draft camps at Portsmouth, Va., and Orlando, Fla.

In Orlando, Mitchell dazzled the scouts in their testing of physical skills. His no-step vertical jump of 37 1/2 inches was two inches higher than anyone else in the 81-player combine, his maximum vertical leap (41 1/2 inches) was second in the group and his full-court sprint time (3.16 seconds) was eighth.

  10. UL Basketball Cajun Blog: Watch for Mitchell’s name late Wednesday

He’s listed as a “second-round bubble” pick, but it won’t surprise a lot of NBA insiders if Dwayne Mitchell’s name gets called late in the second round of Wednesday night’s NBA Draft.

The former Ragin’ Cajun basketball standout’s stock has steadily risen in the eyes of several NBA clubs since he finished his senior UL season in March.

"Terrific. An NBA type of body, and shot it well,” said New Jersey Nets general manager Ed Stefanski after Mitchell worked out for the club.

“He is a high-energy type of guy that I could definitely see getting drafted in the second round for someone to take a shot on.”

Mitchell, who led the Cajuns in virtually every category during his senior season last winter, has worked out for at least six different NBA clubs since late May — Cleveland, Washington, Houston, Detroit and Chicago in addition to the Nets.

More importantly for him, he turned heads at the Pre-Draft Camp Combine in Orlando with his performance in the physical testing. Mitchell had by far the best no-step vertical jump (37 1/2 inches) of any of the 81 players at the combine, with the next-highest mark 35 inches by three players including highly-regarded Ronnie Brewer of Arkansas.
