Thread: Tracking the Preaux Career of UL's Dwayne Mitchell

  1. UL Basketball Mitchell comes home, still pursuing NBA

Dwayne Mitchell's dream of reaching the NBA remains alive and well.

The former UL standout, who now plays for the Iowa Energy of the NBA Development League, was one of 20 players selected to play today in the D-League's All-Star Game in New Orleans. The game tips off at 2 p.m. and will air live on NBA TV.

Mitchell, who grew up in New Orleans, is ready to return to his home state.

"This is a goal that I set early in the season, and I'm very excited about the opportunity to go back home to play," Mitchell told the Des Moines Register.

I DVR'd the D-League All-Star game and watched it earlier (of course only when DM was playing).

He looked about the same. Explosiveness to the rim, manufacturing points. His outside shot needed improvement after college, but it didn't look that much better. He was still throwing the ball away quite a lot.

But his FT shooting looked to be quite improved. I believe he finished with 13 points, but my DVR recording got cut off with a few minutes left in the game. I couldn't find anywhere that confirmed that.

Anyway, it was good to see him play again.

I went down to the convention center and checked out the game, it was great to see Dwayne play in person again. He actually finished with 17 points and had two late dunks (and 1 missed alley-oop). He seemed really small out there compared to all the other guys. I think at his height. even with his strength and leaping ability it will be tough for him to play at the 3 spot in the NBA. Hopefully he can fit in somewhere as a role-player, he deserves it, still a great athlete.

NBA D-League all-star Dwayne Mitchell has left the Iowa Energy

Mitchell, the Energy's leading scorer at 20.4 points per game, left the team to play professionally in Bamburg, Germany.

"He was hoping to get a call-up to the NBA, and it didn't look like it was coming," Energy coach Nick Nurse said.

I was just looking at the iowa energy website and was confused. I hope he makes it to the big time.

This is from one of my recent blog entries:

*Ex-Cajun guard Dwayne Mitchell helped lead Brose Baskets Bamberg to the quarterfinals of the German National League. Mitchell played with the Iowa Energy of the NBA Development League until early March, when Bamberg paid $30,000 to buy out his contract. Mitchell led the Energy in scoring at 20.4 points per game and was a D-League All-Star this season but grew frustrated when he did not get called up to the NBA. He has to limit his turnovers and improve his perimeter shooting to get his shot in the NBA.

Also Brian Hamilton is on the New Jersey nets summer league roster and Orien Greene is with the Charlotte Bobcats.

From an NBA.com Blog by Ben Couch

"Though he logged only eight points and four boards, Dwayne Mitchell came up with three steals, none more impressive than a fourth-quarter rip of O.J. Mayo, who was in the middle of his third crossover when Mitchell stripped him and raced downcourt for a crowd-pleasing jam."

I couldn't imagine pulling for the Lakers but i would have loved to have seen that.

The Lakers need somebody with decent size that plays with a defensive mindset and a little bit of an attitude. I hope Dwayne gets the chance to stick around. He deserved to be called up his first time through the D-League.
