BOSSIER CITY, La. - Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns golf team won their first tournament of the year at the Hal Sutton Intercollegiate at the Golf Club of tonebridge in Bossier City.
The Cajuns entered the day 10 strokes behind the round-two leader Birmingham Southern. UL rallied on the last day of competition slowly making up shots here and there. Louisiana finished the day with a team total of 291, just three over par as a team.
The 291 gave the Cajuns a final score of 874, three strokes ahead of New Orleans and Birmingham Southern who finished the tournament in a tie for second place at 877.
"I am obviously very happy in the way that we played today," head coach Bob Bass said of his team's performance. "We have had good individual performances all season, but I am happy that we were able to put together a good team performance."
The tournament was final regular season tune up for the Cajuns who will compete in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on April 17 through the 19.
"You are always happy when you win," Bass commented. "But this was a good time to win because it gives our guys some confidence heading into our biggest tournament of the year."
The Cajuns were led by a trio of golfers who finished in the top 10.
Sophomore Justin Lowe led the Cajuns on the final day of competition. Lowe carded an even round of 72 on the final day to finish the tournament at one-over par. His performance was good enough to garner a sixth place finish.
Just behind Lowe were Michael Smith and Mark Brockhurst. The duo finished the tournament at two-over par to tie for seventh place. Smith carded a final round score of 76 while Brockhurst finished the day with a one-over par 73.
Morgan Landry had the low score for the Ragin' Cajuns on the day. The sophomore shot a one-under par 71 to finish the tournament at six over par. His efforts earned him a tie for 20th place.
B.C. Thibeaux, III saved his best round of the tournament for last. The Lafayette native shot a 75 on the day to finish the tournament with a score of 236.
"Throughout the season these guys have fought hard," Coach Bass added. "They showed a lot of maturity throughout this entire season. I am so proud of their performance."
