The University of Louisiana golf team picked a good time for its best performance of the 2005-06 season.
The Ragin' Cajuns, less than two weeks removed from the Sun Belt Conference Championships, rallied from a 10-stroke deficit in the final 18 holes Tuesday and claimed the team title in the Hal Sutton Intercollegiate Tournament.
The Cajuns, taking their first team title since the 2001-02 season, posted a three-over-par 291 in Tuesday's final loop around the 6,954-yard par-72 Golf Club at Stonebridge course. That was the low round of the day by three strokes over the 13-team field, and enabled UL to finish at 286-297-291-874.
More importantly, it enabled UL to make up 13 strokes on Birmingham Southern, which led the tournament by seven strokes after Monday's first two rounds and were 10 ahead of the Cajuns with a three-under 573 total. BSC finished with a final-round 304 Tuesday.
"That was a big move for us," said Cajun coach Bob Bass. "We were well back and made up a bunch of shots, and we passed two other teams. We got some real clutch playing."
