  1. UL Tennis LAdy Cajuns Tennis RANKED #51 in the ITA poll

LOUISIANA La. - Louisiana’s Lady Cajuns women’s tennis team cracked the national rankings for the first time since the 2003 season at #51, as announced Wednesday by the ITA. This also represents the first time since 2003 that both the women’s and men’s tennis teams have been nationally ranked during the same season.

“When I took this job, being ranked nationally was one of the goals that I set for this team,” said Associate Head Coach Katalin Gyulai. “I am very proud of our entire team and now we will have to work even harder to stay ranked.”

Louisiana’s women are on a seven-match winning streak and have not lost a contest since February 1. The win streak includes victories over three Conference-USA teams, #43 SMU, Memphis and Southern Miss.

The Cajuns women will be shooting for its eighth consecutive victory Wednesday, as they host Texas-San Antonio, at 12 p.m., at Cajun Courts.

Day and Meijer #56 in the ITA
    Friday, March 10, 2006

LAFAYETTE- The sophomore doubles tandem of Tammy Day and Chanell Meijer entered the ITA doubles rankings this week at #56 in the nation.

Day and Meijer are one of only two doubles team’s in the Sun Belt Conference that have cracked the ITA rankings this season.

Day and Meijer are now 6-3 on the season, at the No. 1 doubles slot and are on a two-match win streak. The two-match win streak also led the Cajuns to consecutive victories over Memphis and Southern Miss., last weekend.

“I am very proud of Tammy and Chanell,” said Associate Head Coach Katalin Gyulai. “This is definitely a landmark for our program.”

Members of the University of Louisiana's women's tennis team had different reactions Monday when they heard the news of their highest national ranking in history.

"Some of us were crying, some of us were screaming," said Cajun senior Celine VanWeydeveld.

"I was crying and laughing at the same time," said junior Kimmie Lyles. "My eyes were tearing up, I was so proud of everybody."

The Cajuns earned some of the fruits of their current seven-match win streak, grabbing a No. 51 spot on this week's Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll. The highest a UL team had prior to this week was a No. 62 spot in the opening ranking of the 2001 season.

"I think it's a landmark for the program," said first-year head coach Katalin Gyulai, whose squad puts that ranking on the line today in a noon match against Texas-San Antonio at Cajun Courts. "It says a lot for our upperclassmen after they went 0-for-whatever three years ago, so they should take a lot of pride in this."
