Don't let Joe Abraham see this he has long wanted UL's mascot to be a hard charging Pelican . . OK just a Pelican.

I find the boxing gloves tie-in unique and telling because UL won the National Boxing Heavyweight Title with Louie Campbell in 1941 and in WWII UL was a Marine/Navy school.

Donald Harper who also won the National Intercollegiate Boxing Championship in his weight class was in the Navy reserve and was to become an aviation cadet upon graduation.

An article at the time stated of Donald Harper "He heads the Bulldog Squadron being formed from Southwestern students enlisting in this branch of the Navy."

I've always heard that Breaux's Baycraft in Loreauville, who years ago built a speed boat and competed in national prestigious racing events, had a boat called the "Ragin Cajun" that was rather famous back then. And, it was from that that the name evolved and was later picked up by USL's AD and made the moniker by our university under Coach Faulkinberry.

One WWII plane that had Cajuns at the helm was called "Belle of the Bayous"

Since UL was a Naval Aviation Cadet Training School back then, I am not surprised to see the "Ragin Cajun" monicker picked up.

Well I like it, the pelican, and what an appropriate thing to have a pelican carrying a bomb to it's target. Blaine to Green, a huge pelican who has wing width over ten feet, and massive ten inch hands, to clutch it's prey.

IMO Joe Abraham loves the pelican, but loves the tri flower much more. I vote pelican over a chili pepper, or flower any day.

I believe HoustonCajun has been the most outspoken proponent of the pelican. I like the pelican and the tri-fleur, too!

I liked the pelican at one time, particularly with it being the State Bird which seemed appropriate for the University or Louisiana. However, Tulane adopted the Pelican as its mascot to go along with its moniker Green Wave. So, on to another mascot. I have been advocating the Gator, given the stadium being The Swamp and our having a swamp on campus with gators in it. The Gator mascot also translates nicely into an on-field character. I forget which poster has the Gator as his avatar, but that is perfect.

Big fan of Shane Bernard. His book 'The Cajuns' is awesome. I actually have all of his books.
