Believe me the reporting Tim does is stellar compared to the 80's.

CRAWFISH61 know of what he speaks, you do not want to go back in time.

thats only natural, did the guys back then have the internet to compete with? blogs? fan forums? they were the only gig in town when it came to coverage, Again, just because he is better than terrible doesnt make it good. Its even worse to go from Josh, who in my opinion was the best we ever had to some guy who hates living here, could care less about grammar, spelling, facts, stats and writing style makes your eyes cross and is like reading a tongue twister.

No doubt, we had it good in the Josh Parrott years.

Lets be honest, they usually dont have the time nor nearly the info that the specialized sites do (Cajunredzone.com!) so when time comes to put a story about recruiting, most of the info is only partially correct.

They will use Scout or Rivals for info on offers, etc., which CajunT himself just made a great point yesterday about how that info is listed based mainly off of verbal offers, many of which arent applicable at this time of year. Also, its hard for him to know when UL has pulled offers or withdrawn interest in certain players so it comes off that we lost a recruit to this school, when in fact, we moved on to another prospect or had no interest or something else came up.
Really it depends on how active the said writer is in contacting prep/JC coaches and prospective student-athletes, how well they know sources close to the program and how accurate those sources are. That source development takes time.

If I didn't get information myself first-hand from those sources I didn't feel comfortable running certain stories. And even then newspapers are hampered by needing sources on the record to comment on signings, commitments, transfers, etc., to make it into print. Don't get me started on having to trust what some of those sources have to say. Had numerous sources flat-out lie to me about offers, visits, interest, commitments and signings over the years. That's when you need people with knowledge of what's going on within the program willing to help you out to get things right.

In most cases, a newspaper beat reporter has the opportunity to adjust coverage to what they think is best. Most newspaper beat reporters from power-conference schools focus on the university's athletic teams and student-athletes and give credit to Rivals, Scout, etc., on all recruiting stories because they don't have the time or interest to track down recruits. That means the use of secondary sources, meaning the info might not be totally accurate.

I just happened to think recruiting was important enough to report about myself in print, blogs and tweets.

Newspapers had it right for a while by having one writer totally dedicated to recruiting, but cuts, layoffs and furloughs ensured that will never happen in Lafayette and many other outlets.

I think we all need to look at the core of what is being written and that the quanity is up greatly. I will take a few misspelled words and questionable negativity for the extra coverage. Too many things in life to be truely worried about than to worry about a few short commings. Geaux Cajuns!!!!!!!!!!!

That's funny. When reading his articles, once I figured how to use a different voice between the dashes....it makes it a lot easier to read.
