Well CFN has their early Bowl Predictions up and wouldn't you know it, The Cajuns are playing in the New Orleans Bowl! They have them playing East Carolina, but note that a number of teams from Conference USA could be the likely opponent. I think the Cajuns would have a great shot at beating the Pirates, as well UTEP. I don't think there is any way that the Bowl would feature a game against Houston, since it'd be a regular season rematch.

A side note, they have my Iowa State Cyclones once again playing in Shreveport 3 days later. If that holds true, I'll be seeing you Cajuns in New Orleans!

  4. UL Football 2006 Season Preview: Defense Looks to Depend on Depth and Experience

Note: This is part two of a three-part series in which ragincajuns.com will preview the 2006 football season focusing on the three main areas of personnel - offense, defense and special teams. TODAY: Defense.

LAFAYETTE - The Cajuns defense allowed a total of 210 points (35/gm) in the first six games of 2005, but then clamped down over the final five games, holding opponents to 94 points (18.8/gm). That turnaround can be attributed to getting to the quarterback. UL totaled 14 sacks over the final five games, compared to seven sacks in the first six games. Louisiana led the conference with 18 sacks in league play. The Cajuns had only nine total sacks in 2004.

After struggling to stop the run in conference play in 2004 (198.3/gm, 5.0/carry, 14TD), the Cajuns improved from last in the ‘Belt to third in 2005 (148.4/gm, 4.1/carry, 11TD). The team ranked second in SBC play in total defense.

The defensive front lost just three players, returns five letterwinners and welcomes six newcomers. Defensive end Eugene Kwarteng had his most productive year as a senior with 43 tackles, 7 tackles-for-loss and four sacks. Rodney Hardeway has the inside track on replacing Kwarteng. As a sophomore, Hardeway posted 18 tackles, 4.5 TFL’s and three sacks. Tony Hills will fill the other end spot. An All-Sun Belt selection last season, Hills recorded 19 tackles, 4.5 TFL’s and four sacks.

Senior defensive tackles Marshall Delesdernier, Travis Ferguson and Joe Bradley have eight letters of experience between the three and should provide an excellent framework to help initiate the younger linemen.

JC transfers Korey Raymond and Lamarr Waiters enjoyed the benefit of spring ball and will have an edge over newcomers Greg Hathorn, Chris Johnson, Blake Ramsey and Colin Windsor.

  5. UL Football 2006 Season Preview: Offense Looks For an Encore

Note: Over the next three days, ragincajuns.com will offer a preview of the 2006 football season focusing on the three main areas of personnel - offense, defense and special teams. TODAY: Offense

LAFAYETTE - The Cajuns slow start to last season can’t be blamed on how successful the offense started games. Louisiana took their opening drive into the end zone six times and led after three quarters in eight games.

The Cajuns led the Sun Belt in nine different offensive categories; scoring offense (26.0ppg), rushing offense (254.3ypg), rushing touchdowns (34), total offense (386.6ypg), offensive touchdowns (37), first downs (227), third-down conversion percentage (44.8%), fourth-down conversion percentage (64.3%), and time of possession (31:32).

It marked the second straight season that UL led the ‘Belt in total offense.

The Cajuns dominated teams on the ground, rushing for a school record 2,797 yards and 34 touchdowns. UL’s 254.3 rushing yards per game ranked seventh in the nation and was the best average in school history. The Cajuns old mark of 206.5 rushing yards per game was set in 1983. UL’s 34 rushing touchdowns was the sixth most in the country.

In addition, the Cajuns fired at 90.6 percent (29-32) in the red zone during conference play, giving the team an 88.1 percent (75-84) red zone success rate in conference play over the last three seasons.

The offensive line was a major factor in the team’s run dominance last season and returns three starters. The unit allowed 23 sacks in 2004 and reduced that number to just nine sacks allowed in 2005 – the fourth fewest in the nation.

If that's true, let us know so we can meet up with our Iowa brethren. (If ISU plays in Shreveport, let me know, I'd actually like to see ISU play).

By the way, I've heard rumor that there are some very lovely ladies in Louisiana. If this is true I'm definately going to spend all the time I can there during the long cold winter month of December!

  9. UL Football Week one’s done, and no big hurts so far

The word “hurt” hasn’t been thrown around UL’s football practice much during the first week of fall camp.

That’s why the Cajuns’ coaching staff and athletic training staff knocks on wood as often as possible.

Through one week of drills, including three days of contact action and two full-speed, full-pads practices, no players have suffered injuries that would inhibit them from taking part in the Sept. 2 season opener at LSU.

“We’ve been lucky,” Cajun coach Rickey Bustle said. “We try to do some things in practice so that our kids don’t get hurt, not taking them to the ground in anything except middle drill, but injuries are a part of it.”

The Cajuns had their biggest injury loss before fall practice even began when offensive guard Will Chance suffered an ankle injury while jogging, one that required surgery last week.

Chance’s loss came in a position that UL, and most other schools, can ill afford to sustain losses. They’ve got their share of bumps and bruises, and the training room is full before practice.

  10. Sunbelt Previewing the Sun Belt

The Ragin' Cajuns were struggling at 1-5 last season when a potent rushing attack sprung into action. They ended on a five-game winning streak, and with a multitude of talent returning, including QB Jerry Babb and RB Tyrell Fenroy, the Cajuns look to be the team to beat this year in the Sun Belt.

"We're appreciative of the support, but for now, it means nothing," said La.-Lafayette coach Ricky Bustle. "We've got to win it on the field, and not in the magazines. Otherwise we'll be known as the team who should've won it, instead of the team that won it."

Jerry Babb returns for his senior season at quarterback. Babb is a veteran quarterback who can run and has a good arm, but more importantly, is known as a leader on the UL team. He'll be protected under a solid line, led by senior tackle Brandon Cox.

Although most of the attention centers on the Cajun running game, the season could be resting on the shoulders of WRs Derrick Smith and Jason Chery. The two sophomores are the returning leaders in catches and receiving yards for the team, and will have to step it up for the Cajuns in order to keep opposing teams from stacking their defensive lines to stop the running game.

Fenroy will lead the ground attack for La.-Lafayette, who finished seventh in the nation in rushing yards last season. The sophomore finished with over 1,000 yards in his freshman year, and looks to rush for even more this year. Bustle also sees redshirt freshman Deon Wallace as a potential breakthrough player this year for the Ragin' Cajuns.

Defensively, eight starters return from a solid defensive unit. CB Mike Adams is a dangerous corner that most opposing QBs will look to avoid, while DE Anthony Hills will head a speedy defensive line.

Bustle's goals are simple: keep injuries and penalties down, play strong defensively, while keeping the ball and holding the turnover ratio down. If those goals are met, expect a huge year from the Ragin' Cajuns, who will cause trouble to a lot of non-conference teams as much as they will to their fellow conference members.
