Thanks to a pair of impressive weekend wins in the rain-shortened NFCA Leadoff Classic, the University of Louisiana softball team moved up one slot in the ESPN.com/USA Softball national poll announced Tuesday.

The Ragin' Cajuns (13-0) moved from 16th to 15th in one of the two nationally-recognized polls. UL was 14th in last week's NFCA/USA Today poll, with that poll's weekly rankings scheduled to be announced today.

UL is one of three unbeaten teams in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll along with second-ranked Tennessee (10-0) and 12th-ranked Arizona State (13-0). The Cajuns were scheduled to meet Tennessee in pool play in the Leadoff Classic before Saturday and Sunday play were rained out.

LOUSIIANA La. – A strong showing at the 11th Annual NFCA Leadoff Classic in which the team defeated Florida State and No. 25 Iowa by a combined count of 20-0 has helped Louisiana’s Lady Cajuns softball team move up three spots in this week’s National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top 25 poll.

The Lady Cajuns (13-0) were listed at No. 11 in this week’s edition of the poll – up three spots from the No. 14 ranking in last week’s poll.

UL received 424 votes in the poll voted on by NCAA Division I head coaches representing each conference. The Ragin’ Cajuns were only 19 votes shy of joining the Top 10.

UL jumped ahead of Georgia (No. 13 last week) and Northwestern (No. 12 last week).

Louisiana is one of three undefeated teams in the NFCA Top 25. No. 3 Tennessee (10-0) and 13th-ranked Arizona State (15-0) are also unbeaten.

This week’s advancement continued the Cajuns steady progression up the NFCA Top 25. UL began the year at No. 18 and has moved up at least two spots in each of the past three weeks.

Despite having its 15-game win streak snapped over the weekend, Arizona earned 13 first-place votes to hold on to the top spot. The Wildcats suffered a 1-0 setback, its first of the season, at the Palm Springs Classic to Texas, who jumped a pair of places to No. 2 with seven first-place nods.

Tennessee, whom the Cajuns were scheduled to play before being rained out Saturday and canceled Sunday at the Leadoff Classic, dropped one place despite a 2-0 mark at the NFCA Leadoff Classic. The Lady Vols received eight first-place votes.

On Tuesday, the ESPN.com/USA Softball Poll was released with UL moving up one spot to No. 15.

No. 11 Louisiana is idle this weekend and will return to action on Monday, March 6 at Northwestern State with a 5 p.m., doubleheader scheduled in Natchitoches. It will be the Cajuns’ first games this season on an opponent’s home turf.

The Lady Cajuns are off to the second-best undefeated start in program history (best is 14-0 in 1993) and will go after the record on Monday at NSU.
