Crews began this week demolishing the old Hopkins Elementary in New Iberia.
The historic school may now be just a pile of rubble, but residents will hang onto fond memories of their alma mater.
Many changes have come to New Iberia since Hopkins Elementary School opened in 1949. Perhaps the most significant was integration.
"I brought 'em over there, to sign up to go."
Clara Carrier's children were among the first African-Americans to attend the school.
"I felt like they should have been able to go to that school."
Carrier has served on the parish school board for more than 30 years, making her the longest sitting member.
In that time she's witnessed many changes in the school system. She says it's tough to see the school go, but she's pleased with the brand new Hopkins Elementary that opened earlier this month.
"It's a humongous school, it is a beautiful school."
Since the old school holds memories for many residents, school board maintenance supervisor Harry Lopez says they've planned a way to preserve some of that history.
